Oh, just read your first post....you have. Bother. I don't know how it would help (straw clutching!) but I think you should look at the electoral roll for your mum's birth address. You never know what you might find............. Merry |

She was the only child she knows of. Although there was talk of a brother named Peter who died? She was given information from Stan's friend that Joyce was from Willington Co Durham? I have looked through the 1947 and 1946 for Joyce Reid marrying an Armstrong on that Ancestry site given earlier. Will try 45 today. Any other ideas? |

Was your mum an only child (I mean between Joyce and Stanley??) Have you looked for a Reid/Armstrong marriage at all? Merry |

I can't find a marriage in Co Durham area for those names. I'm not saying there isn't one, but maybe it would be worth getting the birth cert for Stanley Armstrong in order to confirm the parents firstnames. At least with the info your mum has provided, you can be certain (100%!!??) that is the right birth cert!! You are quite right that finding Joyce might be very difficult indeed (though not necessarily impossible). Merry |

Spoke to my mother! She believes those births and deaths of her father are correct. She remembers her grandma as being a Catherine Wilson and Granda William Armstrong? She also remembers an aunt telling her that Joyce was also known as Carruthers? But like I said before the family/neighbours told her all kinds! |

If the date of birth given at his death nis correct, 5th Nov 1912, you would expect his birth to have been reg Q4 1912. The only Stanley Armstrong in that Q was reg at Salford, which seems completely wrong :o(( BUT Hooray.....There is one in the following Q and it's in the right district!!!!! Guess they were fined for late registration....it happens......my dad's birth cert is one of those.....Anyway: 1913 Q1 Sedgefield District 10 a 357 - Stanley Armstrong Mother's maiden name, Wilson Merry |

THANKS MERRY! the first one looks good. I remember as a young child my mum used to sing a song about granda and bonfire night and I had thought he was Guy Fawlkes!! But she had said it was his birthday! |

If Stanley was born in Chilton, Co. Durham, I can't see a birth reg in Sedgefield District (which covers Chilton) to match either of those first two dates of birth given on the death regs.......:o(( Merry |

Shildon is in county Durham. Mum was brought up in Spennymoor Co Durham and her father ap. born Chilton in Co Durham. His Occ was coal miner so maybe that's why he was in Ripley? Mum can never remember being there. |

Is Shildon in County Durham?? There are these deaths.....You would need to use 1837online to get the actual GRO references (and there are none for 1983 here, because this bit of index begins in 1984!!) Name Death Registration Month/Year Birth Date District County Stanley Armstrong Jan 1986 5 Nov 1912 Durham Western Durham Stanley Armstrong Apr 1989 31 Jul 1908 Durham Northern Durham Stanley Armstrong Jun 1991 20 Dec 1909 Durham Western Durham Stanley William Armstrong Nov 2000 16 Mar 1927 Durham Central Durham Might be the first or second maybe?? As I thought. Ripley is in Belper Registration District and Derby is Derby Registration District. So the poor father after smoking his cigars waiting for the child to be born probably totted off and 2 days later woke up one morning and thought I must register the birth. So from home he popped to the nearest Register Office to do the deed and then went to the hosptial to see mother and child not realising the puzzle he would leave for you. |
