Steve, that's a good site....will be using it to match up my own military ancestors! As for Officer Davis though.............Well, the best for shape is on Page 17 THE ROYAL EAST KENT YEOMANRY But I'm definitely not saying it is that one.......just that there are not many that shape.....most being a crest or animal with motto along the bottom, which Officer Davis' isn't! Well, Edith is right, and I would have thought the names Herbert and Bertram might be easily mixed up......Mildred and Darothy were fairly unusual names and to get both together with a mum from aldershot looks good to me! The 1901 census was taken 31st march, so baby Charles would be born about end of Feb. You could get Clare's name from this cert: Births Jun 1873 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAVIS Alfred Edward W Farnham 2a 78 Steve......going to look at badges now..... Thanks for that Merry, I have no idea. John was married prior to Dinah. Don't know her name but the Children were Bertram and Edith. I have him marrying Dinah in 1896 and her middle name was Elizabeth. Most of this information was from great aunt Mary John and Dinahs youngest going on the best of her recolection, unfortunatly she's now deceased so no checking on that one I'm afaid. Gypsy Joe

LOL Steve, it's V fuzzy! It looks exactly like a pendant hanging from a necklace (only no necklace!)!! It's oval, light coloured round the edge.....even width border all the way round........the darker oval central part is probably where the emblem is, but I can see nothing at all...........At the top of the oval there may be a small clasp that looks as if it is ''hooking'' the oval part on to the small ridge which runs along the top edge of the wide ribbon that goes round the cap......but I may not be seeing what is really there! There, clear as mud!!???? Merry

Yep Dinah did marry John Hall and they stayed around the London area to a degree. Married in Tooting (hope that's right), my grandfather Earnest born 1903 was born in Wandsworth. Up until 1901 there would have been three children Mildred, Dorothy and Charles. I have Chalres being born 1901 though, so it depends on when the census was done. Thanks Merry I'll try that link again. I know Dinah's sister Louise was born in Westminster. Joe

The address where they are in 1881 is very POSH - 11 Hobart Place, Westminster (Knightsbridge)!! All the neighbours are titled or in important professions. Some of the properties have caretakers and I suppose this is the role Clara was taking......Maybe hubby was in the services and out of the country too?? Merry

I can't find them in 1901 or 1891 Gggrrrr Is that your Dinah marrying in 1896 to John Hall?? Can't find them either!! Expect you have though?? Was she still in the London area? Merry

The calvery had bands on horses. MY dad was a bandsman not horses and he had day to day uniform and two dress uniforms as he played at army partys etc; this was not untill 1930s though hope this helps Val

Gosh, it's difficult to think..........Hubby point out that only some instruments can be played on horseback, because you would need one hand for the reins???? I'm sure I've seen buglers on horse back and also playing those big drums? (both hands????) Going to look at the census (I'm sure someone else will know more about army bands!) Lunch was some heat-in-the-oven cottage pie, special offer at the supermarket. It was disgusting!! Merry
