I don't know Staffs or Shrops at all, but if you go to www.streetmap*co.uk - replace * with . - you can look for these places and see for yourself. Sometimes you can see that they are connected by a main road. I am wondering why/whether your William was brought up by a different family? Perhaps there's a family connection. Did you say you couldn't find a birth cert for him? A shame, as it would confirm his mother's name and make it easier to work out who his parents were. nell

We have Ann's (or Annie's), Elizabeth's and Beriah's through each generation then Gladys. Samuel and Ivy come in. This is only 2 generations back this family is a nightmare!! Does anyone know how far Shropshire is from Staffordshire? Thank you Nell, you're being a fantastsic help! Jayne x

Do you think Alma on the 1871 census and Ann on the other 2 could be the same person just written down wrong on the 1871? I know William owned his own mine for a while but I've not been able to find much out about it. If this is them, why wasn't he brought up with them and why can't I find his birth? Jayne x

But v. odd that William doesn't appear to be with them. I think this is the same lot as they also have Isiah/Isaiah, which is the least common name amongst the children. nell

I hadn't picked up on the fact it was the same family he was living with - the 'head' is different on the 1871 I hadn't checked the other names! Maybe his parents died or gave him up. God this is so frustrating! I can't even find a birth for him, Jayne x
