I don't know Staffs or Shrops at all, but if you go to www.streetmap*co.uk - replace * with . - you can look for these places and see for yourself. Sometimes you can see that they are connected by a main road. I am wondering why/whether your William was brought up by a different family? Perhaps there's a family connection. Did you say you couldn't find a birth cert for him? A shame, as it would confirm his mother's name and make it easier to work out who his parents were. nell

I did look at the images and as William said he was born in Dark lane i found it on several census. OK I have a problem. When I put the quarter in as June it says there are no matches but there is an entry for December 'William Henry Baugh' 6a 536. I can see the one on FreeBMD but not on Beta. Am I going mad? Jayne x

Sorry to butt in here and pleased that you have got this far but..... I thought I'd check on 1837 for you the birth ref for William 1860 June madeley... 6d 568 and yet right next to that is another Madeley birth and it's 6a!!!! I dont get it! They are both very clear!
