The magazine just arrived in the post Horatia - havent read it, just flicked through the pages - I know you wanted to know asap. What article am I looking for - the one by Jane Nelson?? Or the Kemp murder? For everyone else, if you have Norfolk Roots, do buy this mag, it is crammed packed with info on Norfolk ancestors, places, people, crimes, occupations and there is always a free disc - this issue is Norfolk Roll of Honour for 1914-1918 war.

nudging for H Actually Im supposed to be working, but couldnt resist a quick look - there are some brilliant articles this month and pages of newspaper obits, marriages etc. from the original sources. Anyone with a Norfolk name want a quick look up in them?

Hi Heather, I seem to recall you mentioning that you have Northants rellies as well. I have Norfolk rellies with a marriage linking to Northants,others going to Lincoln and a Northumberland family moving to Norfolk and then into Lincoln,where the families finally united with a marriage. The Norfolk family are Elmer,the Northumberland family are Hay. The Hay mob are connected (distantly?) to Horatia via George b1809/10 Clerkenwell.At least i think they are,or was it Ann Goulson,can't recall the name at the moment,still very much a work in progress though. Hi there, had a sneaky look in the mag, sorry cant see any Elmers in the listings - be well worth getting this mag if you do have Norfolk people. Yes, cant quite work this out yet but the Horsteads are either in Norfolk or Northamptonshire. One of my distant cousins who has spent a lot of time (though probably not as much as me now) looking for the Horsteads reckons this is just coincidence, but I am sure one day I will tie these two tribes together. At first look, the only connection that comes to my mind is that both Norwich and Northampton were renowned shoe making cities at one time. And lets be honest, it only takes 3 bros and their wives to move to any area, breed 10 kids each and very soon you have a dominant name in the place! One day I will know the connection.

1871 seems to be my downfall,the Elmer father had remarried,the youngest Elmer child stayed with him but the others all vanish,can't understand the Thorbon reference,it's not a previous generation maiden name,maybe something and nothing,but they all use it at some point. The Northants marriage brings in the Browning family,Thomas David,a stonemason,by 1901 children born in Lincs,and Sheffield and residing in Derbyshire. The Elmer father remarried to Susan Wells,unknown maiden name at the mo,she was born in Wells. Coastgaurds,master mariners,ag labs,blacksmiths,think that the only thing missing are cobblers. I could say something there but i won't.

Helen, It tends to be a local publication for local people - it is in all the Norfolk shops, but dont know if its sent further afield BUT you can get a sub - its 6 issues a year - you can phone them on 01603 772205 or the website is norfolkroots24*co*uk (replace asterisks with full stops). Actually anyone interested in Norfolk should have a look at their website as its got bits and pieces of articles they have had in the past on there. Got Jeremy Paxman in it this month too! They reckon that his ancestors would have been Packman not Paxman, traders carrying their packs around with wares on a frame on their back. Theres also a lovely letter written 1850 from some poor kid sent to Australia in hard times, letting his parents know how he is. (In fact now Ive had a chance to read this properly, can see this is actually government propaganda to encourage immigration)!. It really is a brilliant mag

Glen, you are going to have to take a sub too - lots of info on mariners in there! So many local names mentioned - from court cases to obits to football teams a century ago. I normally find a mention of one of mine. I found one was running a little school in an issue a couple of months back - I had no idea she had done that as it fell between two census years.

Just wanted to say that my first copy of Norfolk Roots arrived this weekend and I've found it a very good read, and can recommend it to anyone with Norfolk ancestors. I only found out you could subscribe online thanks to a thread a few weeks ago, so many thanks to whoever put up that thread. Carolyn

Hi Heather, I am so glad you are enjoying your Norfolk Roots mag. I think it is fantastic and a MUST for all those looking for Norfolk rellies. I have bought every copy since it came out and have kept them all for future reference. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with Norfolk links, and also to check out the website as you suggest. They also have a page for letters requests etc. which might be useful for those living out of the area. Another idea is that they are always looking for local interest stories, so why not write to the editor and see if they would be interested in your family history story. Frances

Thanks for the tip Heather,i believe from what i've found out so far the family fragmented,granny is sorted (i think),it's mainly her siblings that are being more elusive,mostly IGI work so far but unverified for sure. Glen

Hi Glen, Yes, Maria Waller is my rellie. She married George Hay in 1871 but he was dead by 1881 but Maria has a Jane Hay living with her on the 1881 census (George's daughter I presume). I haven't been able to find where the couple married. I looked today at the Norfolk Millennium Library for the marriage but couldn't find it - will have to buy the cert. If I do I'll contact you and send you a copy of the cert. Cheers, Horatai
