Family Relatives site

I was wondering if it would be worth buying some units to look up marriages. I have no idea of exact date so would mean trawling through years and years on Ancestry. Would the family Reletives site be any quicker, has anyone used it?

I have didn't think much of it though. I personally prefer Ancestory even if I have to trawl through the dates.

Sorry disagree with Clare. I cant stand the long loading process on Ancestry. familyrelatives is soooo much faster! Marriages have been transcribed from 1866-1920 on there also. Suzanne

1866-1920 is brilliant - I would defo get some units if that is the period you want. Enter event, name (only one first name - it glitches if you put more) area if you know it and time span if you know it and it will bring up all matches. I love it for that period. You may still be able to get 10 free units. Go there, register, click on purchase units, put the code LC2005 in the top promo codes box, click, click on 10 units and hopefully you will set get them free.

I recently took advantage of a 10 free units offer through the Lost Cousins website. I did a search found the record I wanted and no image came up even though it said 'done' at the bottom of the screen. That cost me credit! I emailed them and have yet to receive a reply. So I'm not very impressed.

My personel preference is to use Family Relatives for marriages 1866-1920 that do not show up on FreeBMD. If you screen out using FreeBMD first you can then reduce the number of credits used. I like the site and always keep a few credits in stock, just in case! For marriages (and other events) outside of the 1866 - 1920 period the free to view images on Ancestry are fine - and free! Pete

Rachel, if you look at FAQ on the site you will see if you dont get an image you need to down load their viewer its called Lizard or something. Just click on the link they give, download and away you go.

Wow, thanks Heather, I had just registered with family relatives, having read the first bit of this thread, and then left the site a bit disappointed that it was a pay site. I just tried your code for freebies and it works. THANK YOU sarah :-)))))))))

Heather

Heather Report 10 Mar 2006 20:34

But its still well worth the money when you do pay.

Pete is quite right, check freebmd first and then use familyrellies. However I loved it when I just entered my unusual surname and brought up EVERY birth, marriage and death in the whole country for it.

Rachel

Rachel Report 10 Mar 2006 20:39

Thanks Heather I'll try that.

Heather, are you still there? I just looked up a marriage that I wanted to check. It came up with 2 entries so I clicked to say yes I wanted to see them - they were IDENTICAL and they charged 2 units. Is that right??? Sarah :-l

Heather

Heather Report 10 Mar 2006 20:46

Never had that happen - email them and whine - you may get more freebies.

Sarah

Sarah Report 10 Mar 2006 20:50

Thanks Heather, I've sent them a mail & explained that I'm new to their site and (fingers crossed) they'll do a bit of PR and give me more freebies... well, it's worth a try... :-)

A word of caution - the 1866 to 1920 transcription isn't 100% accurate. I took them at their word and ordered a birth certificate for one of my great aunts - it was the only Dorothy Morgan listed in the correct area however when the certificate turned up it was the wrong one. Granted the other 7 aunts and uncles were fine. iIsent them an email stating that the trnscripts weren't complete despite their statements otherwise and I at least wanted a refund of some units if not the cost of the certificate - never heard a thing back from them despite a follow-up email a few weeks later. It would appear they don't do customer service!

Borobabs, did you enter the LC2005 in the code promo box? If youve used it before they recognise you and you dont get the freebies (I know, I tried!) One thing I always tell everyone though is only put ONE first name in the search otherwise it goes glitchy. Thats sick Cathy - Id have a real old go at them.

Trust me I did - even threatened to describe my experience on every single genealogy message board across the web and hit them where it hurts - in their potential profit regions but to no avail and if they wanted to sue me for slander they could try but I'm intelligent enough to write an experience up only with facts and truth and the bad PR would hurt them not me. So neither softly softly or a declaration of war worked - needless to say I won't use them again.
