Well I trawled 10 years for John Thomas Steers death. He was alive and kicking on the 1861, brown bread on the 1871. After trawling and deciding Id missed it, it occurred to me I hadnt checked the freebmd section on ancestry. Woo hoo, up he came, John Thomas Steers 1865 1st quarter Greenwich Vol 1d but no page number. So I went back to the beta and entered 1865 1st quarter - nothing for him. Ive just trawled the rotten 10 years again and cant find him. The only missing quarter for April-June 1861 but I cant make out how the freebmd brought up a result and its not on the images. Ive tried the image on familyrellies but he is not there for 1865 either???

Heather, I think you were looking at the marriage section rather than the deaths. Do you think he might have married again? If his wife was calling herself a widow on the 1871 census, perhaps he had a bigamous marriage??? Kath. x

Heather Report 10 Mar 2006 21:25

Oh blimey Val, I asked for deaths on ancestry! Has it changed or something? On marriages they normally have the see other people thingy, dont they? Or am I really losing it? Well, thank very much anyway! Back to the drawing board on that one then. I dont think he would have married again!! He would have been 60 nearly. Dont know kids, going to put my head in a bucket of water now. Perhaps too many coffee cup fulls of the old Tesco chardonnay. So where is he then???????????????????

What clues do you have that he died before the 1871 census? Maybe you could post his details from the 1861 census? Emma

Wife is shown as a widow on the 1871 Ive just done a blanket search on familyrellies of period 1866-1920 and not one John Thomas came up. (Oo er missus!) Im beginning to wonder if he died at sea (he was a mariner). 1861: Sophia E Rouse abt 1833 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Daughter Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey Alfred E Steers abt 1847 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey Charlotte Steers abt 1809 St Olives, Surrey, England Wife Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey Emily Steers abt 1841 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Daughter Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey Henry W Steers abt 1849 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Son Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey >>>John Steers abt 1809 Richmond, Surrey, England Head Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey John Steers abt 1836 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey Mary A Steers abt 1852 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Daughter Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene Surrey

I think this is the John Thomas Steers who got married in 1865. His wife was Amy Kitchen: 1871 Amy Steers abt 1833 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Wife St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London Ann E Steers abt 1859 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Daughter St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London Benjamin S Steers abt 1869 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Son St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London John T Steers abt 1836 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Head St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London Mary J Steers abt 1870 Bermondsey, Surrey, England Daughter St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London Robert Hy Steers abt 1866 Rotherhithe, Surrey, England Son St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey London Looks like it could be a second marriage for him as Ann E Steers is born well before 1865! Hi Heather, That 'see other people thingy' has been the subject of much bad language today. I don't know why we have to have so many improvements to something which is working Ok which then gets altered until it is useless or confusing or both. :-) Keith

Heather

Heather Report 10 Mar 2006 22:22

Oh thanks Keith, so it had changed then. I do worry about losing my marbles! If it had the see other people thingy I would have known it was a marriage. B****** idiot, all that time I have wasted trawling through ancestry beta trying to find the damn reference, what a fool

Just a thought, having got hundreds of certs, i have come to expect anything, could he have been registed as just John omiting his middle name, i have seen this before or even by just the name Thomas his middle name, which he may have been Known by, anything is possable.
