Merry

Merry Report 22 Mar 2006 12:37

Are they from Dorset?? Of the 442 net braiders on the 1881 census, 395 live in Dorset, though not all in ''by-the-sea'' parishes. Merry

If you ever need to know what occupations are - just google Old Occupations for a site that brings them up in alphabetical listing Erm, Norwich isnt on the coast Im afraid! Only wish it was Id be out there paddling now! (No doubt with Frances and a few other locals from GR!) However it did have a port. You wouldnt need to be a fisherman to actually make the nets though - your occupation would be fisherman.

Thanks all ,was having lunch.......Female aged 27 was braider in 1861 census........It is unusual in a family of shoemakers........I should know Norwich is not on coast, very senior moment, was hungry.......

Heather

Heather Report 22 Mar 2006 13:15

In which case, if its a family of shoemakers, dont it seem more likely its something to do with laces or such?

Sandra B

Sandra B Report 22 Mar 2006 13:18

Heather Report 22 Mar 2006 13:44

Born Sheringham on the coast? and living Norwich?

Sandra B

Sandra B Report 22 Mar 2006 13:46

yes I think so....... She is head of family and unmarried. aged 27, the only one from there, the other Jaery's are from Flegg.........

Merry

Merry Report 22 Mar 2006 13:48

That is so funny!! I already guessed you would be looking for Jeary's (can't think why!!) so I had already looked for 27 year old women called Jeary in the hope of being very clever and finding her without asking you....... I found this one: Ann Jernby abt 1834 Norwich Boarder Norwich St James with Pockthorpe Norfolk but she doesn't have an occupation!! I thought I was losing it when I saw that is WAS INDEED Ann Jeary you were looking at! but this one: Ann R Jeary abt 1834 Sheringham, Norfolk, England Head Sheringham Norfolk (living in Sherringham, not Norwich!) You said they were shoemakers, but look at her neighbours: Cooper - Fisherman Wells - Fisherman and Smith - Master Twine Spinner I'd say it was definitely fishing nets. Merry

Well at least I am doing a lot of research myself...........Good old Jearys......Maybe this one is the maiden aunt, looks like fish it is............Now ,where do I fit her in,who were her parents..................You will probably hear from me later......Keep your Jeary Papers at the top............This is fun......Maybe one day I can help other people............back to my roots.......Thank you...........

Heather
