My Great Grandfather William Thomas Dixon married one Margaret Bennell in Sunderland in 1899. I have found their marriage reference, and also them with their 1st child on the 1901 census. so far so good. Margaret Bennell it seems was born in Brotton Yorkshire, and I found her (i think) with her family on the 1891 census in the hamlet of New Brotton Yorkshire. Father Samuel Bennell age 46 an Ironstone ? born Bocking in Norfolk. Mother Jane E age 36 born Eston Yorkshire George son age 15 Ironstone ? born New Brotton Yorkshire Margaret dau age 13 born New Brotton Yorkshire Agnes dau age 10 scholar born New Brotton Yorkshire Sarah Ann dau age 8 scholar born New Brotton Yorkshire John ? son age ? (3) born New Brotton Yorkshire. I cannot find them on any previous census. I think I have birth references for Sarah Ann and Agnes for Guisbro' from Free BMD, but that is all the information I can find. Any ideas I know its a prime name for mis-spelling Thanks so much.

Sometimes I find it just as easy to leave the surname out altogether and just put in all the other details etc. age, first name, where born and dont forget to try using wildcards * ? I found it by just puttin Ben* as the surname Suzanne

There are some good Yorkshire sites and some good Norfolk sites which may be useful. I think you should be able to find them either by using the thread-search here, on GR, or by seeing what's under the County on ukbmd.org.uk. - I'm not on the right computer to be able to post the URLs for you. Thanks so much you are a star Suzanne (*) I dont understand how it is mistranscribed as Bennett when with the magnifying tool it is easy to see as Bennell. I had that happen with my Hara's, they were transcribed as Hard!... I would never have found them if someone like you hadnt helped me, So huge thanks to you, and to everyone else who helps out. xxxxx Ann
