Thanks peeps - you've mostly allayed my fears and reservations! I will bite the bullet very son - and upload the latest version of my tree from GR to TP - and possibly GenC too! I do have some tree stored on Family Historian - but have not yet found myself at ease using that - it somehow baffles me when I think I've got the hang of it! Pooreold girl! Rosi

Have put my tree on Tribal Pages a while ago but haven't been back there since. Find it much easier to use the free download of Legacy, and I don't have to log into the internet to find it. It makes sense to invest in a memory stick though - about £12 from Argos I think! I still keep my GR tree updated though, as I am desperate for rellies on my father's side to make contact, and this is only likely to happen on GR if everyone else keeps their trees updated too......So please don't stop adding to your GR tree, you may be my long lost cousin!!! Kathy in Blustery Oxon.

I belive that, like GR, there is no delete tree option. However loading a new version of your tree from GEDCOM will wipe the original. If you want to lose your tree completely, probably the best thing to do is upload a GEDCOM with one person in it - you. All the rest will vanish! Lx

Rosi I am on TP and have 'ahnentafel'

Rosi Report 2 Apr 2006 11:47

Slight snag- have just been to TP to maybe delete my tree on there and start again - and there is no 'delete tree' facility. Further, on looking at the message boards there seems to be some alarm from people who would like to delete Gedcoms from there, but find they cannot any longer do so. A bit of a hooha going on! Maybe will stay away for another few months - or take another look at Gencircles. One thing I remember loving about TP was the 'ahnentafel' reports - but hat seems not to be there anymore either - or perhaps that is only available if you pay now, and not of the free site? Rosi

Thanks Jim, I'll have a look at doing that. Having forgotten about how good I found TP when I first used it all those months ago to have to wait a further 24hrs or so while it uploads the new tree with all the new names will not be such a problem - I hope! Rosi

You can always delete your tree on TP and upload a new one. I have done it a few times. I can't remember whether it gave me the option to upload and automerge.

Hmm - I transferred ( umm - uploaded!) my original tree from here to Tribal about 18months or so ago. Since then I have added a fair few names and info to my tree on here - but not done so on Tribal (or Gencircles for that matter). I somehow forgot about it. Is it a simple process to merge somehow the new info with the old - or do I have to add it name by name? That would be so tedious. Finger crossed there is another way! Rosi

I've been having a play with GEN circles and you do seem to be able to get submitter's email addresses and info about people without paying. I'm sure I'll find the catch soon. Lx

Oops, I had forgotten about Gencircles. I joined that about 2 years ago and have hardly looked at it since. Does anyone know if it is possible on Gencircles to get info or email a link without having to pay the 30 dollars membership?

If you are uploading a Gedcom File to another site please ensure that you have filtered the information. Foe example you need to hide the details of living persons who have not given their permission to have them displayed to the general public. N.B. If you are planning to upload a tree on to here, make sure that, after you have applied secrecy to living persons, that you put your own personal info back on or else GR can't import it as the Primary Person (You) can't be identified.

Uploaded my GEDCOM to Tribal Pages the other day and received my email around tea time yesterday. Went and had a look. It looks good and I have created a password for the rest of the family so that they can have a butchers at it. Hopefully will get round to adding a few photos and census records to it. Anne

What problems? I have just deleted my tree and uploaded a new Gedcom with over 4300 entries. I have not experienced any problems!!! I think people need to look at what GR is here for. It is not a substitute for maintaining your family tree in a proper package that can do reporting etc. I see Tribal Pages as in this category - it serves a different purpose to GR. GR holds basic family tree information for the purpose of finding matches with other people, and to provide message boards like this. It has it's faults, but then nobody is perfect. Paul

Morning Alan. Export your tree to a GEDCOM. You can do this from GR, but be patient. It takes ages (hours)! Or you can do it from a prog like FTM at home. Set up an account with Tribal Click on Edit and enter your Administrator password Go to Tools Go to Files Scroll Down and in the Import ing a GEDCOM File section, browse to find ther GEDCOM that you have just created. Click on Senf File. Wait. The file will upload to Tribal. Once it has uploaded, close your browser Window and forget about Tribal until you get an email saying it has been processed. You won't be able to do anything in your Tribal account until it has. Once it has... the world's your lobster! L

Hopefully you've gone to bed already, but for others... It should only take a few minutes at the most to upload your GEDCOM to Tribal ready for processing if you have broadband. Once you have the message saying it is in the system, you can shut down or do what you like. The processing is happening on Tribal's computer. My tree took about 12 hours to be processed, hubbie's took less than hour *stamps feet - not fair!* If it's taking 1.5 hours to upload to Tribal then something has gone wrong. The file had to be less than 8 meg - not that big. On broadband, that's nothing - on dial-up it could take a while. You won't do any harm by shutting down - half way through the upload. However, you would need to start again at another time to get it uploaded ready for processing. Lx PS If you do choose to allow your names to be searched in Tribal, be aware that their search engines refresh once a fortnight. This means your tree may not show on searches for two weeks!
