Thanks Valerie, I thought perhaps I'd done something wrong. Heinz, they don't send you the exported tree immediately - if I remember rightly, mine arrived the next day. |

Hi Old Crone, Can't vouch for other sites, but Tribal Pages is very good. Your data isn't 'used' on there at all, as far as I'm aware. Have mine on there for about a year. As for access, you can leave your tree completely open for anyone to view OR the facility is there to install a password. You then give the password to anyone you want to allow to see your tree - friends, family etc, or anyone who contacts you, who can prove a link (like on here) :)) Debbie |

If you want to get really serious about back-ups, then get an external storage drive such as the one made by Maxtor. They are really simple to install (just plugs into a spare USB port on your PC), and the software is also very user-friendly. I have mine set up to automatically back up my entire PC hard-drive every night at 4am. That way I can never lose more than 1 day's worth of data, even if I get a catastrophic hard drive failure. Great not just for my family history files, but also music, photos, accounts, etc - everything on the PC hard drive, basically. And because it's automatic, I don't have to remember to do manual backups! Richard |

In addition to all other means you can also backup online for free. I have mine on Y a h o o Briefcase. It gives 30 MB free space with max 5MB per file but this is still a large gedcom. There are others. Bob |

Lesley, it isnt that complicated as long as GRs export/import facility is working properly. Just click on the link Import/Export Tree on the green margin towards the bottom and follow the instructions. |

Have just read through this, and opened a tribalpages account. I've instructed an exportfrom this site, and waiting for that to happen, but please can someone tell me how I go about importing it onto tribalpages? Would be most grateful for any help! |

When the email arrives you will open it, Maybe it will come as an attachment. When you try to open the Gedcom File it will say you need to start a new PAF File. Just click yes, give it a Title and away you go. Then you can also import your current Tree into the same programme. If you know that the new info contains a previously unknown parent or child you go to the one you know, click on Add child or whatever, then click on existing individual. You will then get the Search list. Find the new individual you want to add and click on it. That should transfer over all the linked people in both the Trees, although sometimes you may have to go to Match and Merge in the Tools Menu and tidy it up. A word of caution with Match/Merge on PAF. There is no 'Undo' option so be sure you are joining truly matched individuals. |

Sorry - I think I have found out how to do it by trawling through the tribalpages site. That'll teach me to look first! If I get any problems, I might be back for some advice. |

Another tribal pages convert! I've got my tree (password protected) on there and just contacted my living rellies with PCs so that they can look. It's easier than posting wadges of paper from time to time. Especially as I have one very interested rellie in the USA and another in Tenerife! I'll still maintain the GR one (I upload GEDCOM from my FTM from time to time) as it's a good way of finding other similar trees. L |
