I ordered the marriage cert. last night so once again its a waiting game. Thanks for everyones help. I'm glad I wasn't missing something obvious when I couldn't figure out why she was a Gillard at such an early age.

Maybe the marriage cert to George Lewis will help your mum come to terms with things?? (Bet it says spinster!) Merry

Awww I hate it when happenings occur after 1901. My mother seems to want to believe she did get married and her explanation is, maybe she married her cousin and thats why she named herself MRS Gillard.

Maybe Martha went to the Midlands herself? This might be her still in devon in 1901. ......................>Martha Lewis abt 1885 Tiverton, Devon, England Lodger Tiverton Devon Alice M Seldon abt 1884 Tiverton, Devon, England Daughter Tiverton Devon Francis J Seldon abt 1882 Tiverton, Devon, England Son Tiverton Devon Margaret Seldon abt 1851 Tiverton, Devon, England Head Tiverton Devon

I'd thought of the gruesome link too. You can never tell, especially with them being from Devon. :) ***That was a joke by the way for anyone ready to have a go at me. Now if it had been Cornwall I'd have been serious. ;) *** I was told by my mother that she was divorced so I'll take it that she was unmarried now. Can you find a George Lewis in Derby instead of Lucy in the 1901 census. Martha Lewis ends up here in the midlands so if Lucy didn't bring her up north then was it her dad or did she move in with her half brother Frederick?

Cant see any Lucy born Tiverton living Derbyshire in 1901. Have you checked for their deaths? Only thought a bit too ghastly to contemplate is that the first kids were due to incest - in which case your family legend would have some truth to it.

Sounds like a cover-up to me! I would be very rare to have been divorced if you were not rich in those days. Merry

Confused here, like Merry - Lucy is shown as head but she still has the name Gillard - isnt she just an unmarried mum? Or do you believe she was not the Gillards daughter and married into the family? She is shown with them as a 7 year old. Why dont you buy the birth certs of one of her kids to see if a father is named?

Exactly, that's what i've been racking my brain over. She was 'definatley' divorced. However looking at this it would seem that the marriage and divorce never happened but it may have been a cover up for her 'loose ways'. ;) That's one reason why I've asked on here for other eyes to look at it. Also can anyone find them in Alvaston or anywhere close to Alvaston, Derby, in 1901 as I can't but that's where they settled.

If the Lucy in 1871 and 1881 is the same Lucy as 1861 and 1851 she was never married!!!

Merry

Merry Report 29 Mar 2006 14:53

In 1871 and 1881 you say ''and where's hubby?'', but Lucy doesn't have a hubby - she is unmarried........ I don't understand the bit about the divorce re Gillard? Isn't that her maiden name? Merry

Births Dec 1844 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GILLARD Lucy Maria Tiverton 10 276 snap Not sure what you are looking for though. Is this Lucy your GGMx2?

Fiona

Fiona Report 29 Mar 2006 14:49

This looks like the birth of Lucy born 1844, so if it's the same Lucy I'd say the 'F' is a mistake. Births Dec 1844 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GILLARD Lucy Maria Tiverton 10 276 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The only Lucy F I can find is this one which looks like it's the daughter she had before she ever married. Births Jun 1876 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gillard Lucy Fanny Tiverton 5b 442 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh yes the only marriage i could find, I've listed at teh bottom, is with a Lucy MARIA which doesn't link with the Lucy F. Could that be a easy mistake to make. The initial F being transcribed or written wrong?

Not sure how this will look when pasted from word but here goes. My maternal great grandmother is Martha Lewis. I was told that her mother, my great, great grandmother was a Lewis by marriage but she divorced a Gillard where she had a male child. That is all the information I have other than that they are from Tiverton, Devon before moving to Derby. Using this information I spent last night scouring the online sites for information and collated the below information together. I have placed a bit of info/questions after the source. Could anyone interested have a look through and see if a) I'm on the right track here, b) find any more information that I may have missed and c) tell me where I need to look to get more information and d) get me some coffee to keep me awake as I'm absolutely knackered now after staying up late looking all of this up.  1851 England Census (Lucy's Parents Home) Edmund Gillard abt 1837 Tiverton Son Tiverton Devon Emma Gillard abt 1847 Tiverton Daughter Tiverton Devon Henry Gillard abt 1839 Tiverton Son Tiverton Devon James Gillard abt 1833 Tiverton Son Tiverton Devon Lucy Gillard abt 1844 Tiverton Daughter Tiverton Devon Maria Gillard abt 1809 Barnstaple Wife Tiverton Devon Richard Gillard abt 1835 Tiverton Son Tiverton Devon Robert Gillard abt 1803 Tiverton Head Tiverton Devon 1861 England Census (Lucy's Parents Home) Fanny Gillard abt 1846 Tivertonk, Devon, England Daughter Tiverton Devon Lucy Gillard abt 1844 Tiverton, Devon, England Daughter Tiverton Devon Maria Gillard abt 1807 Barnstaple, Devon, England Wife Tiverton Devon Robert Gillard abt 1806 Tiverton, Devon, England Head Tiverton Devon 1871 England Census (Lucy's Parents Home but where's Hubby?)
