I found quite by chance a while ago the draft details of a guy from the USA who'd been drafted in WWI, and it said 'sister living in Birkenhead', so he may not have been American by birth - it could have been a relative who emigrated. I found it on ancestry(.)com, not ancestry(.)co(.)uk .

There are quite a few sites where you can post pictures of unknowns in hopes of reuniting them with a family member. One popular site is DEAD FRED GENEALOGY PHOTO ARCHIVE which you can view at: http://www.deadfred(.)com/ or Cyndi's List has a whole page of suggested sites which you can view at: http://www.cyndislist(.)com/lost.htm Remember to remove the ( ) from the addresses. Elizabeth, There is a website that you can post a copy of the photo on, or leave a message on their boards, or email them, it has a large category on GI and Canadian Servicemen and their warbrides from the UK from WW1 and WW2, I am sure that you will get pointed in the right direction - www.weddingspastandpresent(.)co(.)uk

My dad was an american stationed in Burtonwood .Maybe that could be a starting point. My mum was living in Birkenhead when they met.I think that a lot of the troops went to dances in Liverpool..Good luck,

Can you describe his uniform? Is there a name of the photographer's studio? It's not impossible you know.

I can't see any other reason as to why she has a photograph of him .He may be the dad of a family member. regards lizz

Since you have no idea who he was or where he was from, I think your only hope is that someone who knew your grandmother in the area, might recognise him. (that's if you think your grandmother might have spent time with him). Kath. x

but his family would have been in america so locals may not recognise him. lizz

I've tried googling and it looks like the local newspaper is the Wirral Globe. There may be others though. Kath. x

Do you know where your grandmother lived at about the time the GI's would have been over here? If you do perhaps you could send a copy of the photo to the local newspaper in the hope that someone might recognise the photo. Without any other clues, I think you may find it hard to get any information. Kath. x
