To answer your question about Ceylon / Sri Lanka Merry, I think the name must have changed some time in the late 60's early 70's as my Dad was in the navy during this time and he said it was called Ceylon when he was there. Just a little bit of trivia for you! Lindsey |

Of course we all know that transcribers are supposed to copy what they read EXACTLY.......so how come when looking for a person born in Ceylon, I couldn't find him??????? Here's why: Name was badly written, but Ceylon was written very clearly as his place of birth. So why hadn't I seen it when looking through EVERY ''Born in Ceylon'' person on the census????? because Ancestry had transcribed Ceylon as Sri Lanka! LOL.....when did the name change?? Around WW2 wasn't it?? Merry |

My GGFx2 turned up after much searching, place of birth shown as Thadwete. Scratched my head on that one, after staring at the image for ages realised it said Shadwell. |

Well done, its so satisfying when you finally find them isn it. I had relations who were transcribed as living with an Elizabeth Green, which totally threw me and I thought I was on entirely the wrong track. When I looked at the census itself it very plainly said Elizabeth Uren, which I knew was the wife's maiden name. Eureka! Then my Gt x 4 Gran's relation to head of household said 'Ruper Heare', with her son listed as 'son of Ruper Heave'. I knew she had never remarried and that her son was from her marriage to my grandfather. Looked at the original census and it definitely said 'Housekeeper'!! Am so glad I bought those credits and looked at the original census returns. Its great when those pieces fall in place. Bex |
