Every day I get several messages from people who assume a hot match is actually a match when the two names have no correlation to each other!!! It's a pity genes can't find a way to link the name, age and place of birth!! Another moan is when people message as if you contacted them following hot matches - for eg 'Sorry my Joe was born in Shipley' when you didn't contact them!! Moan over - any one else sick of having time wasted? Jacquie

Sam Report 13 Apr 2006 15:26

I had one the other week that said 'Sorry Sam, I don't think so'. I sent a reply back, 'Pardon? You don't think WHAT?' It turned out to be a hot match (or not!) but the person sending the message just assumed I would know who they were on about - I have over 1000 people in my tree! Sam x

I've been in contact with several descendants on various lines and it's been interesting, and helped me end a couple of 4 year old brick walls!!!

Jaqui, before you get really worked up may I say something.I and an awful lot of people who are new to GR.,think that when we get a hot match it has come from the person concerned. There is a note saying, 'Send blah a message' so we do. It is only after being on site some weeks that we realise it GR making the match not the other person. So give us a break and tell GR to make it clear what is going on when they make hot matches. I did exactly what you are complaining about a few months ago and I was moaning for weeks about bad mannered people not replying to messages until the penny dropped. We are not all computer whizz-kids or au-fait with the system. give us a chance to learn. Thanks Sylvia.

Ann I get pages and pages of ones for common surnames too (matching to unrelated people). Sylvia I'm not having a go at new folks who don't understand that I didn't send them a message, but at genes who should find a way of making things easier to understand for them. Those baffling he's not mine messages drive me mad! Have a great Easter all anyway. Jacquie

I dont even check my hot matched anymore, have not done for the last 9 months or so, but i have the same problems as you and many others on this site, Having thought about this and GR doing nothing to improve the situation i have decided that the only way to stop this is to remove everyone in my tree and just leave me as the only person in my tree, but if i do that then what is the point being a member at all? After ploughing through page after useless page of them I felt the same! I have only had 3 matches and 2 haven't replied. But the one that did turned out to be 3rd cousin with whom I have swapped loads of info and the lovely man has even sent me a pile of old photos! It was worth the wait! Bev x

Other people with smaller trees have contacted me through Hot Matches and we have made some good links, but I am still on the A's and just beginning the B's after however long they have been doing the system (about a year is it??) In that case I will be dead and buried before I get to the end of the alphabet!! Merry

Could someone explain the rules to me then? We get a hot match, the name and date fit one of our rellies,we mustn`t contact the other person,so how do we follow this up? Sylvia.

Hi Sylvia I do understand some of the 'moans' on this thread but I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick. The way I approach 'hot matches' is this: 1. If I receive a 'global' e-mail from GenesReunited with several hot matches I 'view' each one in turn. Sometimes it just refers to the person and a date, with no place shown. In this case I usually 'discard match' at the bottom of the page. If there is also a place stated and it's remotely close to my own relative then I send a polite message saying that I've seen the hot match and asking for more details. 2. You can follow the above procedure at any time by clicking on the 'hot matches' link on the left side of this site. 3. If you receive a personal message direct and the person doesn't say that they have found your details through a 'hot match' you can either ignore it (which could be construed as a bit rude) or reply asking why the person has contacted you. 4. There is a facility on the main hot matches screen to 'don't show me these again' which you can tick and therefore reduce the overall number of contacts to those that are relevant to your tree. 5. My comments here are based on my own experiences with hot matches and I have to concede that I don't get inundated with messages as some other members have indicated here. It is fairly obvious that some people have been very successful in contacting new relatives through hot matches and others who find it annoying and user-unfriendly. I think there are elements of this facility which could be improved to minimise unwanted contacts. Perhaps a few of us should approach GR with suggestions. Sorry to have gone on a bit and hope the above helps in some way. Regards Ron

I think Hot Matches would work much better if the place of birth was shown on the first screen. That way you could whizz along, ticking all the boxes that were definately not matches and delete a page at a time. Another problem is that Hot Matches always reverts back to page 1. So if (like me) you have a lot of people who you DO have connections with they soon fill up the first page and you have to keep clicking onto the next one each time. Then again, maybe I should delete the people I do know I'm connected to?

Hi: I have made 3 matches with distant relatives so I am quite happy. I do agree they should try to match a little better. Just because the name is the same doesn't mean a match. Regards Shiela

I have 37 pages of 'Hot Matches' I think about 2% are Hot Matches the other 98% just have the same name. Takes to long to go through them all and delete. We need by district also :-)

Definately they should match at least countries. I dislike when I have sent that polite little email asking for more information about said person & I get back the automated 'this is not my relative' which I take to be a bit rude. And people that steal trees & post information on living people really irks me, especially when I don't even have them on my tree then they go & add them, eg my son is 2 I have not included him as I just don't want his info out there.
