I wonder if anyone can steer me in the right direction to look for Roger Newton. His parents ran a wet fish shop from 2, Hamilton Street, LEICESTER in the 1960's He was most probably born between 1943-47 (aged early 60's now) As this is all I have to go on, I am at a loss as to where/which reference sources I should be looking at Please help!!! Hi Mike I am forever in your debt...again. Two witnesses of William Goadby's Will made in 1942 were Arthur Henry Smith of 2 Denmark Street and William Arthur Smith of Taylor Street, carpenter and joiner. I would guess that William was Arthur's son. The mystery is that no-one ever mentioned Arthur, or his half sister Annie Riley, so it was a bit of a surprise to find he was a witness and was around at the same time as my mother. Was hoping an electoral roll entry might give me name of his wife and/or other members of the family. Is there a photo archive at Wigston? Cheers Sheila

Greeting's Again Sheila.... Remember this one..... Mother gave us the run around ...... Using the Trade Directories I have to hand This is the latest records I can go to ..... Leicester Trade Directory 1916.:- Denmark Street / Taylor Street. No. 2. Denmark Street. ARTHUR HENRY SMITH. Shopkeeper. Don't forget that for the years 1939 ~ 1945. It was ( World War II ) So I understand no elections took place..... Next time I'm at the Records Office Wigston I'll see what I can find .... MIKE.

Sheila Report 11 May 2006 16:57

Arthur Henry Smith Born 1882 in Leeds Son of William Smith and Ann Smith (formerly Goadby, nee Bodycote, later Riley) I'd never heard of him until I found him on the census for 1891 and 1901 at 2 Denmark Street. Because no-one in the family had ever mentioned him I assumed he had perhaps died young, but no, he witnessed my great grandad, William Goadby, his half brother's Will in 1942. He was still living at 2 Denmark Street and gave his profession as grocer, like his mother and her mother before her. I now realise that he was very much alive and that my mother must have known him, although she and my gran denied that Ann had had any children by her second and third marriages. Would anyone be able to help with an electoral roll look up for that address sometime between 1901 and 1942? Does anyone have Arthur Henry Smith in their tree?
