My ancestors, Grants and Gordons, came from what seems to be a small area in Scotland called Cabrach Parish. I've googled it and found a lot of historical info, but I think it no longer exists under that name. Can anyone tell me if it is still a seperate area under a different name or is it split up. The main towns are Torniechelt, Aldivalloch, Largue, Buck, Auchmair. They were in Aberdeenshire. I am in Australia and would love to find out what these places are like now. |

Hi Elizabeth, If you google 'Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History society' I am sure they will be able to help you. They have an amazing amount of information in the office in Aberdeen and were very helpful when I called in. They have a number of interesting resources and publications and cover the Cabrach. As you will know it is a very remote area of Scotland and not densly populated nowadays. I had a quick look at a modern map and although Cabrach is mentioned I couldn't see the other villages. They were probable little hamlets or farms. They are probable mentioned on old maps which you can link to via ANESFHS SITE. |

Use www.viamichelin(.)com, plot a route from Aberdeen to Cabrach, gives you a good idea, Derek in France |

Elizabeth - apparently I've been there!!! lol Mailed my pal and he has said that Aldivalloch and Auchmair are in the area of a place called Rhynie. Seemingly one time when I was up visiting I was around that area!! I'm visiting him again next weekend and if we're out and about I can take pictures in that area for you if you'd like and forward them on to you.... He says they arent places as such but more areas if that makes sense...but he is going to see what else he can find out for you Jill x |

another wee update for you Elizabeth!! Aldivalloch,Torniechelt and Auchmair are apparently all farms around that the Cabrach area! Or hills that have the farm named after them... http://www(.)threestones(.)co(.)uk/gallery/AldivallochAndHillhead(.)html remove the brackets There is also a Scottish melody called Roy's wife of Aldivalloch which was written by an Elizabeth Grant between 1745 - to 1815 - wonder if there is any connection with the name Grant there for you!!?? http://www(.)contemplator(.)com/scotland/roywife(.)html Hope some of this will be of help to you! Thanks Jill, I'd love some pictures. I think that Grant is probably one of mine. There seemed to be only three families there Grants, Gordons and Kellas. The number of times I typed the same names. I only hope it was more populated then than now, otherwise there was an awful lot of inbreeding going on. Then again, that could explain a few things. |
