As a relative newbie I found that (please don't groan too loud) the Who Do You Think You Are book absolutly fantastic full of good resources & advice but also a case study followed through the book of William Towers & celebs..... I agree too the magazines are a must I tend to buy 1 or 2 of the different titles depending on what their articles are on & what I am researching.... |

Thanks for that, it sounds a good idea. Is Am**on a 'safe' site to buy from ? I found a book on there yesterday which my son wants. We ordered it at Waterstones, but the could not get it... I was a bit afraid to buy it last night!! Deanna X |

Hi Joan sent you a pm but just had to put up this post for others. I went to Borders today to buy the book you recommended. I was told by them that it is no longer being printed even though it was only brought out last year. I just thought you could let us know where it came from as My Local Borders in Stockport Cheshire did not have it and could not source it from anywhere local to me. I have yet to search the net as i have just got back and came straight on here to let you know. I have the ISBN number so i will get onto it straight away and if i find a copy i will let you know. That's ok Sharon ! I am finding it very informative, it has lots of info regarding where to start, places to look other than the usual for more obscure things such as poor law records, it even has bits about crime & punishment, education, migration etc. Hi Joy !! Yep you are so right. Sometimes there is so much info we can't take it in, & I am finding these books a good place to start. For the money it is very good value though! :0) Joan |

Thank you. :-) ........... and my tip (in Jim's newbies thread) is I found it useful to borrow reference books from the library first of all before visiting records offices, the Family Records Centre in London, and before browsing websites. I found them so useful that I had to buy them to refer to them - George Pelling's Beginning Your Family History and Colin Roger's Family Tree Detective. Never think you can find everything on the internet - you can't! There is a lot available, but not everything. |

I've not been doing this long & have just treated myself to the most fabulous book. It's called 'How to trace your family tree in England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales' by Kathy Chater. The ISBN 1 - 84309-97-8 cost £4.99 . Best fiver i've ever spent!! Joan |
