Hello Heather, I am planning to purchase Family Tree Maker 2006 . Can you tell me how I would download my tree from Genes Reunited onto FTM. Is it an easy process ? I am worried that I might lose all of my info. This will be my first Family Tree Program. Regards, Lyn. |

Lyn I think Heather is in bed, she gets up early. But it is very easy to do you go to the import/export at the left hand side of this page and it will arrive in a email probably tomorrow which you then import into FTM, the only trouble is at the moment some are having problems getting them , as GR has a problem and is supposed to be sorting it , so it might pay to wait a couple of days. |

Thanks Valerie, I'm a bit of a worrier ! I've spent about 18 months added info to the tree. I was just concerned that it would 'vanish' with the press of a button. I live in Australia, and the cheapest FTM that I have found is A$100 . However, I think it will be worth it. Regards, Lyn. |

Hi there Lyn $100 seems a bit steep - have a look on play*com or S and N Genealogy or Amazon - Im sure they all post overseas. The play*com is offering the FTM plus 3 months ancestry sub for less than £30 - whats that in dollars? $50? Your worry re losing all your info is why most of us have a program off GR - look at all the problems people are having at the moment with messages disappearing, my contacts list has disappeared and people end up with a mangled tree when they export. With your own family tree program (and it doesnt have to be FTM, you can get free ones which may not have all the bells and buttons but which people are happy with - PAF from family search being one) you can keep in on your pc separate and with FTm and some others I believe you can back up onto a cd every time you add info and put all the info at a click onto an internet website of your own. So you have the info in at least 3 places. |

Lyn, FTM2006 can be purchased from TWRcomputing for 26.45 pounds (65 Aus.dollars) for the single edition version, and 35.45 pounds (87 Aus.dollars) for the edition which includes 90 days Ancestry subscription. They are extremely efficient and their prices include delivery to anywhere in the world. |

Gillian, where have you been? You can trawl the whole thread for info - but if you buy it at play*com you get the free sub. |

Sorry to creep in on your thread Heather,, message for SEAN I Live in Oz too and have recently bought FTM from TWR Computing,,Excellent service and it was delivered post free after about 5 days,, I would also recommend if you consider buying the FTM Manual that this would be the place to get it from...Post free,,,Others' postal charges are quite steep Good Luck..It is a great program. Kate, I think Sean wants the Aus/NZ version - did you find a problem with buying the UK one? Apparently the Aus/NZ has cds with immigration details etc? But it does seem a hefty price at $100 doesnt it? As Peter has told us, the FTM2005 is available for less than a tenner at TWR computing including a months ancestry sub. |

Bob, do you mean the web search? You do need a sub for that. If so you could upgrade to 2006 or to be honest, buy the £9.99 2005 with that facility plus a months sub. Have a look at TWR as Elaine is also recommending them.: Elaines message: FTM2006 can be purchased from TWRcomputing for 26.45 pounds (65 Aus.dollars) for the single edition version, and 35.45 pounds (87 Aus.dollars) for the edition which includes 90 days Ancestry subscription. |

Hi Heather (great thread).....and all clever folk! I have FTM 2005 and have added photos and copies of BMD's and Census images to the source facility. All photos and BMD's etc. are saved on my computer to My Documents. So the file path when I add them to FTM is, as I understand it, from My Documents to FTM. Can anybody tell me - IF I transfer all the stuff I have in My Documents to a CD (which I am thinking of doing because I have so much stuff it's slowing down my computer), and delete them from My Documents, would those photo's and BMD/census images still appear on my FTM? Hope this makes sense! Dee x |

Dee, I think you need someone cleverer than me but my gut feeling is No, you would lose them as the FTM actually follows the path to get them and if they arent there then they wont be on the program. Ill leave this to someone cleverer like Peter. |

Methinks the same as you Heather! And so I don't know how I can leave a CD behind for my descendants, which will have all the information AND photos etc. on it! Dee x |
