I still think that this is a great board and am constantly picking up tips from other members (as well as often asking for their help). We may sometimes have a bit of banter between us but then that is what friends do, and I feel that lots of the regular posters have become cyber-friends. The vast majority of the board is still dedicated to giving and receiving information and tips. |

Ozibird Snort snort! Havent you realised yet that I am a creature of the night and dont come aboard till 6pm? I am still on old-fashioned dial up, due to the limitations of my ancient stone age computer which only has windows 98. Olde Crone |

I don't agree with your views Ed - The Tips Board is a fantastic tool - it helps all members who are experiencing problems - whether it be with their family history, or in my case - severe crash problems. I only entered my request for help last night, and already there are several replies, and one possible solution. As its name suggests - its there for tips on how to.. whatever. Great! Ancestry obviously has provided us with all the deatils from 1841 to 1901 census wise but the bigger picture has been the result of personal research in county records and the network of connections due to this site. The consequences of being on this site>>>> 1) recieving an email from a cousin of my grandmother living in scotland whom neither me nor my 65 year old mother had ever met.........we only had a photograph of this womans uncle(my great grandfather)....she is in her seventies and without gr and the internet would never have exchanged stories or photographs. 2) finding relatives long lost in the last 50 years in Australia and New Zealand.......children of people that my mother last saw in the 1950's after a visit . 3)finding a man living down the road (aged 73) who turns out to be my greatgrandmothers younger half brother,42 years her junior.....the only living connection to a huge family that I am directly descended from, and leading to discovering photos and stories about people that my Nan used to talk about when i was small. They were a family of 21 children born over 42 years. and theres more |

Maybe youve moved on, as youve learnt more about Genealogy, and the site is too light weight for you? I've found this site an absolute godsend, and have learnt so much (census transcripts, Pigots, Kelly's, etc...) as well as finding many people connected to mine and my husbands ancestors. I havent got access to most of the census' at the min, and some fantastic people on GR have given their time to do look-ups. However, I can understand what youre saying. Maybe the Records board would be more for you? |

So if we have got the wrong end of the stick Ed, just what do you find wrong with the Tips Board? Im getting older and slower so may be Im just not following your line of thought. There is nothing on this board which doesnt help someone with their genealogy research. Records Board is for the real hard core straight to the point investigations. General is for people just to talk to like minded people. I always feel more at home on Tips than the other two boards because we share info and help each other in more general terms than Records but still in genealogy based areas. I just dont understand what your complaint is. To be absolutely frank from what I have seen, your requests have always been dealt with by willing souls on this board and not Records who tend not to spend time on vague requests but kindly look up specific info in their resources. |

Ed. You are not my boss and I am not your employee. If you don't like this board then don't read it. You cannot tell a bunch of individuals they are collectively ''losing their way''. Maybe you should do some lookups (for others)? We don't see you for weeks and then you say your views have not changed. Well I'm sorry if we are not keeping up to your high standards. If you want something to change, you have to put some effort in yourself. That is the art of good ''management''. Alternatively, if you want to upset the ''staff'' you should pop your head round the office door, tell them they are ''losing their way'' and then go back to your executive suite. What is the point of this thread? Merry |

I totally agree with Urban Girl. Okay, so sometimes the odd thread does 'digress' a little, but that's the beauty of dealing with human beings. |

I guess you also lost your way Ed if its taken you this long to notice the thread that you originated. No one complained when you requested the same info over and over - still they went to every effort to help you. To be honest I think you have a bit of a nerve to even start this thread. Now, Im getting back to the business of helping other on here - you should try it some time. |

Do i sense some private messages flying back and forth here? Shame, its best that everyone can read what is being said in situations like this Jess |

Ed. It is rather rude of you to say you have ''scanned a handful of the replies'' when there were over 90 reponses at the time you chose to tell us your views had not changed. Not a lot of point in anyone posting. Maybe you should delete this thread now? (Jess, I have posted everything I have thought!) Merry |

Jess, no private messaging - Ed has just added an update to his original posting - apparently an erm, friend emailed him about his thread's replies, even though it must have been on about page 120. |

I have sat and watched the replies being added to this thread, and must say I agree with what people are saying. I find your comments somewhat upsetting, having helped you many times in the past. If you glance down the first page on the Tips at the moment there are only 3 postings which could be classed as 'not asking or giving genealogical advice' - your thread being one of them. I would suggest that you tread very carefully when you ask for help in the future. |

Excuse me for butting in, but isn't the fact that everybody (including myself) is commenting on this the only thing stopping the ''proper' Tips postings' from pushing it off the bottom of the page? |

Of course, Mark.......if only Ed hadn't nudged it, it would be down on page (three digits) by now!! Ed says he hasn't read it all and wouldn't have read any of it, had a friend had not allerted him to our replies. In the original version of the original post (it's been changed) - Ed did say he would not be replying to this thread. It has taken 2½ months for him to come back, yet he still says the board is not as he likes it........but presumably he hasn't been looking at it in between?? Merry |

Well ... the only problem I have with off-topic threads or comic diversions is that I spend far too much time reading them. :-) It's like going to a buffet where they have so many different salads and desserts that I can't decide which I want (and don't have enough room to try them all). This is what I would call a good problem to have. Tim |
