As I understand it when they applied for a copy birth cert - they were informed of this separate letter and gave the name of the father but said any further info would have to be read in person t the Register Office. I never heard of this occurring where the birth is illegitmate and no father named. I believe actually it is Brighton BUT if the father is the person in my tree I can assure you fame and fortune there is not!!!! Ann

Is it possible that this birth was re-registered at some point and they have the the other entry available to view? Do you live along way from the register office as I would camp outside!

I am having the same problem 1921 ..no father registered on the certificate, and I know the child was illegitamate ..but no indication that there is anymore information available ..how did you know there was further info?

The child named on the cert is not a direct relative of mine so have to wait for the relatives to get to the Reg. Office. Patience yet again! Ann

Perhaps the father wrote a letter saying that he was indeed the father and giving his details but wasn't prepared to go to the register office (for obvious reasons if he was already married with children), in which case no matter what he said in a letter, his name would be missed off the certificate. If it was me I'd be on my way there already!!! Kath. x

Well, he would actually have had to go along with the mother to the register office to register the birth with her to have his name on the cert (it is still the same today if you're not married.) So it could have been awkward if somebody who knew him saw him going in....! Kate.

Am surprised by the details left with the Registrar - this is 1910 - if the father had given permission would his name have been lodged on the cert? The 'gentleman' concerned (if indeed it turns out to be he) was married with four children!! Ann

I'm with Kate on this one, there is something along these lines in the WDYTYA book, but i can't find the details. There are dates quoted and some guidance as to when and where disputes over a fathers name could be argued, just can't find it when you want it. Glen

I haven't come across this before, but if the father didn't give his permission for his name to be put on the birth certificate, the box on the cert would have to be left blank. And I am pretty sure that the register office would not be allowed to add the name into the box on a copy for you because they can only supply a 'certified copy'. So that is probably why you have to go and look at it in person. Kate.

Wish they had that down for mine,i wouldn't have a lopsided tree. Glen

Apparently the father's name has been given to them as listed on this piece of paper but none of the other details - must be viewed in person. The birth cert has a blank for details of father. Ann

Sounds very interesting.I can't think what it would be,disputed name for the father perhaps, but i wouldn't have thought so. Glen

Janice - not my relative - but there may be a connection to our tree through the 'naughty' daddy!!!!! Found it strange that personal details should be lodged and wondered if this had been done in more recent years by a researcher/relative - never heard of this before. Ann

Have been contacted by a possible link into family tree - however I find the following info. strange and wonder if anyone has come across this before. Illegitimate birth registered in Sussex in 1910 - when applying for this - they have been informed that relating to this cert. that there are personal details on a separate piece of paper which may only be looked at, in person, at the Registrar's Office. Any thoughts? Ann
