339 ish! There are the twins whose children marry, so I've not counted the duplicates, also omitted a couple of dubious lines. This is a useful exercise as there seem to be quite a few lines as my notes are not up to date. I only seem to have 10 people in the 12 generation, but I don't think that that is right. Does anybody else find that some ancestors have clear identities, but you can't remember how the h*ll you are related to them?

That's funny - hubby is half spanish!! He now had 6 great-grandparents on his tree. The full complement of four Spanish ones, but only two of the others! LOL If you are going to look up the registers in Spain be prepared to bribe! LOL Merry

My poor hubby's list is: Parents 2 GP 4 GGP 8 Total 16 & that's it. We've only got the GGPs because his mum has a good memory! They're all Spanish - from up a mountain in Andalucia - We'll have to go there sometime & check the church registers Sarah :-)

Just counted manually, Cheated a bit & included Ann Unknown & Hannah Something (>>stage whispers -and one or 2 others if I'm honest) and I've amazed myself with 81 direct line ancestors that I'm working on (as well as the sibs.) Thanks for making me count Merry - It's made me feel better about getting into a pickle with my Benhams & Horwells. Sarah :-)

Not sure how to do it, thought all the dark numbers on my report were direct but I ended up with over 5,000! And as I only have 655 on the whole program ................... Well I can see I have 13 generations on there.

Well, the first time I counted I got it wrong!! 2 parents 4 gpts 8 g-gpts 16 2xg-gpts 25 (should be 32 if you have a full set) 3xg-gpts I was able to see the above by asking my home program to show me a five generation chart for each of my parents. As you have the far superior FTM I'm sure it would do that, or maybe better? For the lines that went back that far, I just looked at each line individually to see how many more people there were. After I'd done that, I saw that my program will do something called a collapsed ancestors chart. I did this for me and manually counted the result, but this only took about 2 mins as they were all listed on the same sheet of paper. So, do you have any collapsed ancestors??! Merry

Ummmmm Laura, were only talking about the direct line people - not their brothers and sisters!! No one can have more than two parents, four grandparents, 8 gg-parents, next gen 16, then 32, then 64, then 128 etc etc If you include everyone back to g-grandparents, inc yourself, that shouldn't be more than 15 people. That's unless you are adopted and have two trees, or are doing a step parent's tree or something........ !! Merry

Oh dear - I can't count mine. cos it gets too complicated.... 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 4 great grandparents, 8 2GPs - then it starts getting a bit odd, cos they all not only married cousins, but the grandparents of the cousins were cousins too, and if they werent, they were second cousins, or they were the product of a first marriage and married a descendant of the second marriage...its called IMPLECTION I believe. I cant even draw it out on paper, let alone enter it on GR. I have gone back with certainty to 15 x GGPs, all in the same village, but the charts I draw will never be understood by anyone else, ever! I have two couples on this line, my 13th and my 9th GGPs, called Thomas Green and Mary Robinson. They are so closely connected by blood that I think they must have been twins! Olde Crone

Oh no, the Smiths are all my hubby's, Smiths who married Smiths to make things worse. I keep all his lot on a separate tree, well away from my 'refined' family (who were mostly iron workers and file cutters apart from the one posh line)

Not quite sure if I asked PAF the right questions but it came up with the answer 189. Having said that, William the Conqueror is possibly my 28 X G Grandad (thanks to 5th cousin Maggie for counting) but I have only got to my 17 X G Grandad in the tree on that line (he was a Baron living in a castle, I was happy to stop there! LOL).

Vicky, you're not the only one!!........one of my great-grandparents was born before civil reg and my earliest 3xg-grandparent was born in 1748! Then you get people on here who's grand-grandparents were born after 1901!! LOL Makes me feel very OLD! Merry

Easy, I thought, when I read the challenge. Then I started totting them up. NOT so easy after all. (NB Note to Merry, all my ancestors are collapsed and I am fast following them, but unfortunately not on my family tree programme). So, at the end of the day, and pretending to be my daughter (so I can include husband's tree as well, and anyway I want to be young single and pretty again), and bearing in mind that I have cousin marriages which totally ruin one's statistics (surprised the government hasn't banned them for that very reason), I have a grand total of 110. But some of them are just names, no more than that. I prefer the one's I can weave stories around. Tina

not fair - I only have to go back to my 3x grand parents to get to 1800, thanks to a couple of people having babies in their 40's. I do have all 16 gg-gp & full names/dates for 23 out of 32 ggg-gp. I regard that as an achievement in itself, as several of these died before the 1851 census. This generation has a cousin marriage, and of that line I have another 16 people taking me back to the early 17th century, my 8xgt grandfather so thats a total of 55 people. But it is all my own work, and I've only been doing it 8 months.
