Deryn, the staff at Kew are absolutely marvellous. And I can assure you there's nothing more thrilling than turning the pages of a dusty old ledger (even the smell gives me a rush) to discover a handwritten entry about an ancestor. Whatever you need to find, the staff will go to great lengths to help you. You can sense the enjoyment they get from their work.

Thanks you two! It is very difficult sometimes when you know you know how to find records and some of them just don't want to be found. It makes matters worse and I must say it did put me off totally at one stage when some poeple on a different site treat you as though you shoudn't even be there. Paul, I meant should I contact the York one. I am close to Kew but wouldn't have a clue what to do there! All my relatives are in Yorkshire so I am going to visit in the next couple of months. I will write to them if you think they would supply any info. I have only ever searched for things on the net so am a bit of a newbie when it comes to what I can find at Kew or a Military Museum!

You ask about getting records from Kew - the National Archives site explains the process fully. However, if as your name suggests you are already in Surrey it would be worth driving over there on a Saturday morning - it's a marvellous place to visit.

I have found the curators of the military museums to be very helpful. You may have to pay a fee for their time, but for that you're likely to get useful info if they have any. My g-father was in the Yorkshires in WW1 and they sent me a copy of the regimental war diary for the period he was with them. In the case of my uncle, who was with the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, they sent me some other material. Christine

Deryn - York's a long way from Surrey! I should phone them first! Don't allow yourself to get 'miffed' by some of the comments you receive - we're all passionate about our hobby and sometimes it comes across as impatience!

Thanks for up-dating the thread-header, Deryn. It makes a difference to know what we're dealing with! (Or, at least, to all the people who are actually helping this time, unlike me.) Christine

Thank you for the help. Just some points I need to clear for different people that replied - I have not reposted this at all - it is another generation - the parents and children have the same name. If people think I have re-posted to get more help or more answers and they want to get miffed as you call it - then let them. It is a different generation and a totally different search. Thanks for the info so far. I did get your original message regarding the museum - thanks. I didnt know I should contact them, I was just going to go there. Will they have individuals details there and give them to me?

Deryn, I have already given you the details of his regimental museum now based in York. Have you contacted them yet? You should be able to find out a lot of useful information from them.

Deryn Starting a second thread on the same subject will not increase your chances of getting help.........in fact, it's more likely to have the opposite effect, as people will either get miffed, or confused.............depending on their approach. Reg

Hi there, you mentioned on your other thread that Joseph , the son was on 2 census, one with Elizabeth, his sister and another with his wife and boys, just wondered if you had seen these? 1871 England Census Elizabeth Buttrey abt 1855 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Daughter Leeds Yorkshire George Buttrey abt 1865 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son Leeds Yorkshire John Buttrey abt 1868 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Son Leeds Yorkshire Joseph Buttrey abt 1831 Aux Noix, Canada Head Leeds Yorkshire Margret Buttrey abt 1827 Ireland Wife Leeds Yorkshire Mary A Buttrey abt 1862 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Daughter Leeds Yorkshire 1861 England Census Elizabeth Buttery abt 1855 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Daughter Leeds Yorkshire Joseph Buttery abt 1831 Canada Head Leeds Yorkshire Margaret Buttery abt 1827 Ireland Wife Leeds Yorkshire

Deryn. If you copy and paste the (info/genealogy) replies from one thread into the other - and warn people that that's what you're doing - you can delete the redundant thread and keep all the info together and people won't cover the same ground twice. Christine

Haven't we seen this thread before? Or is it the next generation - I just remember the surname BUTTERY, because it's rather distinctive! Christine

Judith Report 6 May 2006 16:45

Have you searched for/obtained birth entries for either Elizabeth or Joseph junior from the overseas section of GRO indexes. - if so did they not give mother's maiden name, or at least Jospeh senior's regimental number to help with search for his records? There are 6 Buttery births in Canada between 1825 and 1834, including three called Joseph on the Army Chaplains Birth Indexes.

Deryn Report 6 May 2006 16:17

I looked on Ancestry Uk and searched all. I seem to have gone brain dead looking for them! Joseph and Elizabeth Snr could have stayed in Canada and died there. How do I get his army records from Kew - can you order them online? Any idea of cost?

Q3: Elizabeth his wife - No info at all other than his wife and mother of two children listed below. No Birth, Marriage or Death Record. A: again, where have you looked? Q4: He served with the 15th Regiment (Yorkshire) in Ireland 1825 - Child born there - Elizabeth (1825/26) Got birth and marriage but no Death. He served with the 15th Regiment (Yorkshire) in Ile Aux Noix (Fort Lennox, Canada) in 1831 - his son was born there (Joseph 1831). The children moved back to Yorkshire but what happened to the parents. A: perhaps you could get his army records from Kew, which would give his date and place of birth. Perhaps the parents stayed in Canada. nell

I was racing ahead and I have now hit a very thick brick wall! Joseph Buttery Born ? (about 1800 could be Yorkshire - Leeds)Where and When exactly and who were his parents? Where did he die and when? No Birth, Marriage or Death record can be found. Elizabeth his wife - No info at all other than his wife and mother of two children listed below. No Birth, Marriage or Death Record. He served with the 15th Regiment (Yorkshire) in Ireland 1825 - Child born there - Elizabeth (1825/26) Got birth and marriage but no Death. He served with the 15th Regiment (Yorkshire) in Ile Aux Noix (Fort Lennox, Canada) in 1831 - his son was born there (Joseph 1831). The children moved back to Yorkshire but what happened to the parents. Makes it more complicated by them all having the same names!
