Is there a Land Registry equivalent in California?

Does anyone know whether you can find out details of ownership of property in Orange County? When a property is sold, is the transfer of deeds registered somewhere, as it is here at the Land Registry? If so, is it a public record? Would appreciate any info from someone with a knowledge of sunny California!
