Have you checked out all his siblings? You'll probably find he has a married sister who lives down that way.

In answer to Liz - if he got lost on the way home from the pub he'd only gone about 250 miles about of his way!

Georgina Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if he was in the army or not! So the next question I have to solve is - where do I find army records?

Can anyone suggest why someone born and brought up on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border should suddenly show up on the 1901 census as being in a home for Inebriates in Battle, East Sussex? Any ideas why he should be so far away from home? The home for Inebriates does fit in - this particular person had a nickname of 'boozer'! At this time his family were still in the same village they had always been - apart from his 8 year old son who I can't find a record of anywhere. All suggestions greatfully received - we can't work it out.
