I have a very poor 1870's photo of a distant cousin in Dress Military Uniform. Does anyone know a site who can help identify his regiment, or is there anyone on here who can help if I describe it, please? (that's what I'd rather do.....as I looked at an ''military help'' site once before, but was baffled as to how to use it!!)......Merry x

Thanks for looking Roy......he had a son, Charles Caton, but his middle name was Artis. Charles senr began life in Bedfordshire, but after a spell in Bedford County jail, he moved to Dundee where all his children were born and he lived out his life. Merry

Merry, The second choice was Highland Light Infantry! ;-) I've just realised that the Scots Guards records might be at Wellington Barracks in London. I sent off there for Coldstream Guards records but they each have their own archivist. But is there a difference between Royal Scots and Scots Guards!?? I'll find the address! Cheers, Horatia

And does anyone know if the Scots Guards and the Royal Scots are one and the same?? I'm a bit dim about the army! Blame my genes on my pacifist Quaker ancestry! lol Merry

Valerie, Merry is after were the records are kept? their official site say's the records are kept at the national archives for soldiers serving before 1921 but on the national archives site i found this. British Army: Soldiers' Discharge Papers, 1760-1913 are two exceptions: The Guards Regiments (Coldstream, Grenadier, Irish, Scots and Welsh Guards) are places of deposit for their own records and these are accessible by writing to the appropriate Guards Regimental Headquarters, Wellington Barracks, Birdcage this is from the regiments.org site regiment formed 1642 Marquis of Argyll's Royal Regiment 1650 Foote Regiment of His Majestie's Lyffe Guard 1651 disbanded 1660.11.23 six independent companies in Scotland 1661.05.01 Scots Regiment of Foot Guards (also known as The King's Regiment, The King's Foot Guards, or Scotch Guards) 1686 placed on English Establishment, ranking as 3rd Foot Guards 1713 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards 1831.04.29 Scots Fusilier Guards 1877.04.03 Scots Guards so it looks like they were not actually known as the Scots Guards untill 1877 Roy
