I was just trawling for Jeremiahs who married in St George Hanover Square on Pallots. I found a Jeremiah 'Esq' on there, clicked excitedly in case it was the right guy with surname ommitted. Guess what his name was - Jeremiah Dick Esq. So I clicked on the corrections tab (some poor soul may have spent years looking for this guy) and under the 'reasons for correction' I put quite bluntly - 'This Groom is a Dick'. Bet they will have a larf at ancestry over that, thinking some poor naive old dear has entered it! Even more amusing, the bride was Harriette Le Coq. |

BTW, talking of Cock and Bull stories. We had a local history programme on tv sometime back and I think it was in Colchester and the presenter went into the Cock and Bull pub there and apparently early Victorian landlord used to have a competition to see who could make up the worse weird and wonderful lies and tales - they got a flagon or barrel or something once a year. Hence, 'Cock and Bull story'. Im full of interesting tit bits, arent I? |

Old Crone!! Have you got ancestry? Go on, have a look - check out Jeremiahs or even easier, enter Harriette Coq. And then you owe me a complete translation of an 17th century will. |

Its 25 pages long by the way and written in Hebrew in part. You have to admit though, you couldnt make that one up could you. Isnt it a shame we dont keep a list of daft ones like this to cheers us up on those cold dark winter nights when we all sit here brick walled and screaming internally at people to google for info! |

Heather I've already done it for you - it says 'I leave everything to Ethel' |

Yes, the usual ones I get having paid out me £3.50. I always seem to get the ones who grovel to God for most of the page and then end it with 'everything to beloved wife Ann'. I think they did it on purpose. |

Yes, I had very high hopes of a Will for my very rich 4 x GGF, huge farm loads of stock etc.and 14 children. It is the shortest Will on record, I think - he gets rid of his Godly obligations in 3 lines and then says 'I leave everything to William Hammond' Who he??? Why??? OC |

Thats a mystery then OC. Oh, he was married! Not erm, a(what my elderly neighbour used to call) a 'natural bachelor'. It does make you wonder when you look back and try to understand the situation and the people, why they did things, how much their beloveds were beloveds. Its very hard and I do try to think about it - you tend to think of these people as just a snapshot - but they lived a whole long life, day in day out - into their 90s (or 100s if your Glens one). Its incredible really, cant really take it in - not cardboard cut outs, not characters in a period drama but real people, talking thinking crying, larfing every day for decades. Fascinates me beyond words. Whens someone going to invent that time machine. |

Nite Marie, nite OC, night Merry, nite John Boy. Im off for a cuppa and a fag guys. Hope you all have a peaceful night and tomorrow brings ease to anyone who is anxious and happiness to you all. If its sunny tomorrow Im going to the church a couple of miles up the road to chat up a stone mason doing some repairs there to stick one of my ancestors headstones back together. Its got a stump sticking out of the ground and the rest (with beautiful decoration and beautiful legend to the mans kindness and generosity) leaning up against the church just waiting for a passing romany to whip up and sell for a patio. The archdeacon (my god they take headstone repairs seriously) has okayed it, aslong as its so many inches from the path way. Fingers crossed, eh. Hope the mason doesnt want too much though! Otherwise, its Merry, OC and Val at midnight using the superglue guys! NITE NITE |

Yes, I often ponder all this too, Heather. Why did a youngest son get the farm? Why did the oldest son remain a Farm servant all his life - was there something 'wrong' with him? Or did his father hate him, for some reason? Why was another daughter seemingly brought up by distant relatives, who had a pub? Who was the father of that daughter's baby, which she had when she was barely 14? Was it the dirty old Uncle, or was it the Potboy? AND - I recently had some photos from my 3rd cousin, showing several people from the late 1800s - all the women look like ME, so who do we all look like then, who do we take after, some 10 x GGM, or who? Fascinating stuff. OC |

Yes Old Crone - you sometimes feel you want to reach out and just grab at the understanding of it all, dont you. And its the whole long lifetimes of working and living that I really cant get my head round. And yes, why am I like I am. Who had the squashed right thumb that has come all the way down the line. I know who the anxious depressive ones were but at the same time as someone brought up the other day and it did make me think, they were also the ones constantly searching - for new business ventures, for improving themselves - so I can see a plus side of them now. Ill book you a place on the time machine too! NITE FOR NOW my dear cyber mates. |
