This morning I have discovered that sitting in front of the computer all the time means I am EXTREMELY unfit!! My muscles are complaining about yesterday! Now.......................what were you saying about this Admiral bloke? Merry |

Ah, the plot thickens! In 1881 and 1891 John George is apparently MARRIED to Harriet and they have a daughter. Why does poor old Harriet get demoted to Cook and bottle washer by 1901?? But in 1871, he is married to an Emily. Olde Crone |

Gosh, you are all going to be SOOOO CROSSS! My brother insisted on seeing the full 1901 (he is very sulky about all this, LOL) and on it appears Harriet Foden, cook. Pamela Holden's mother is Hannah, nee Foden and Harriet is one of her sisters! So,Gus is the son of an employer!!! No relationship at all...at least, I dont think so...still havent pinned down Jim's birth though. Still, its cleared up a loose end and when you are cursing me, spare a curse for silly, aged relatives who get the whole thing wrong! But, how and why was Jim living with Pamela? The neice of his father's cook, when presumably there was a bit of dosh left from George Henry Walker. And I have a whole new lot of Walkers on the IOM, so it wasnt entirely a wasted evening! (Bet that's the last time anyone ever offers to help ME) Olde Crone |

I must admit I've really enjoyed taking part in this hunt! Will have to leave you all to it. My husband wants a lift to the station in time for 08:20 tomorrow - and it's my non-office day when I normally have a lie-in! goodnight! Christine |

I forgot this: George A Walker 1912 Q3 Tadcaster 9c 1956 Jim must have been born between 1908 and 1911 Q2, as there are no births with mum's maiden name Rolph between 1911 Q3 and 1920 other than the one above. Wonder a lot about this one: Births Mar 1910 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WALKER John James R Tadcaster 9c 996 John after paternal grandfather, and R for Rolfe??? Whoever John James R Walker is, he seems to have died before 1983. Merry |

Christine No, I googled it myself(using your criteria) and got to the pages of results fine, but when I clicked on the individual lists, I got page cannot be displayed. My brother has accessed them with ease this evening! I will have another go in a minute, it may just be internet explorer playing up, it never seems to like me much. Well, we have gone a long way from an unknown Admiral tonight, haven't we? You are all absolutely brilliant you lot, just think how much a Professional Researcher would have charged for all this, and it would have taken him months, probably. OC |

Oh Pam, shucks - I never do any lookups for anyone, so cannot be said to have ever helped anyone! Thankyou for your kind words though~~~~! Merry Despite the ah, little set-back re the Walkers of the IOM not being the SAME Walkers as the Headingley lot, my brother has been moved to get his butt onto Ancestry and has made a breakthrough we think, which connects the Holden/Walker lot on the IOM to us. Jane Sayle marries Thomas Walker. Jane Sayle is sister to Catheren (sic) Sayle, who is the mother of Ellen Grimshaw, second wife of my tricky James Holden. So, although the two Walker families dont appear to be connected, we have made a breakthrough in two directions, all in one day! Brilliant result, all from poking dubiously at a bit of mangled family gossip! OC |

I've just noticed that in 1901 John Geo Walker, b 1846 is NOT a widower, so where is his flippin' wife???? Under the mechanically engineered patio? Maybe she is the Holden? LOL Merry |

Thanks for the drinky! Slurrrp!! 1901 address: 121 Victoria Road, Headingley. Nextdoor-but-one (115) there is another John Walker, also born in Leeds, aged 45, a boot manufacturer. His middle initial is W. Thought I'd better tell you in case you got caught out with the electoral roll or something! Merry |

Oh brilliant, Merry! So now I know that Gus and Jim were BROTHERS, not father and son. And the 1901 looks right - in Headingly! Can you see the address without spending any money? The Holdens lived in Brudenell Grove in 1898. This is so maddening because I cannot see how the two families are related - wonder if they were family friends and called 'cousin' as a sort of courtesy title? We also have a mystery John appearing at Pamela's home, as head of the house, in the rates book - wonder if its John Walker and they got muddled up at the Rates Office?!? Now Merry dear, do help yourself liberally to champagne won't you, its rather a good vintage... OC |

Oh Merry You have burst my bubble...its the other son who is an engineer not Farmer George!!! George and Ann dont appear to have any children if I remember correctly from the 1881 and as they are in their 40s, doesnt seem likely. Sooo...back to the Leeds connection...I did SO want him to be the IOM Walkers, sob sob. But ah! I see on the 1841, Janetta is just plain old Jane...off to look for her birth with renewed vigour! Thankyou everyone so much for your help (and big mwaah to Jen Red and Purple for that Leeds bit). I shall sit down now and do this properly, like you are supposed to do! Olde Crone |

Oh, more anecdotal evidence! Pamela Holden's brother Joseph, married twice, once to a flirty girl who produced two daughters. He then divorced her in a blaze of scandal and later remarried - a widow,... who already had a daughter called Josephine...who went to Canada.... George Henry Holden, son of Janetta and Quarton Levitt, was 'well placed' I think - his parents lived in a substantial house on the IOM in 1881, and, as an Engineer he probably got to meet other professional families, hence the good marriage! But I have to check all this of course (calm down, Crone) |
