Thought you might be interested just had a call from SLP and they are very interested in the details we found about Herta and like us all sad to hear that she had died and not made it to the USA to join Heinz, they will do a follow up story and asked that I send on to them the details of all our emails. (so I hope you all don't mind) I will keep you all informed of all updates, they said they are interested in people's stories. Best Wishes to all who read the story and added to the board. Carolx

Just a thought, has anyone contacted Southwark Archives? My nan was a fire warden during the war and Ive had lots of stuff from Southwark Archives library. Recently Stephen Humphries wrote to tell me that they are preparing a book about war time Southwark and nan would be in it. Would it be worth me asking them if they know of this air raid? Ive just emailed them to ask if they are aware of an air raid that night. Will let you know if I hear back.

I have relatives (first cousin twice removed) who were killed in an air raid on 11th September 1940. They were killed when their Anderson shelter was hit. Perhaps they are the people refered to in The Times article. Kenneth and Agnes McDonald and their 2 year old daughter. I don't know their address but definitely South London.

Very sad sorry. I found another avenue we can try to find Heinz Boley, his immigration card it listed a friend he was staying with Julius Weinberg in New York just maybe if we trace the family we may find Heinz Boley or what happened to him. fingers crossed lizz

Sorry, Carol - for one, I don't have a scanner and secondly...I wouldn't have a clue how to get them on Genes. I was trawling the US White Pages (like our residential telephone directories) today, hoping to find a Heinz Boley listed...tons of Boley's but no Heinz, unfortunately.

I still feel sad at being the one who found her death. I do hope that someone can find the information that reunites her belongings with her family. I am sure its what she would have wanted. Herta's story certainly brings home how awful war really is for those involved. Helen

Thanks for the link Joe, unfortunately there are no pictures with the story. Is there anyway they can be scanned in and added to the Genes photo page on msn? I do so hope there is some follow up on this - I too think she's been waiting all these years to tell her story and now is the time for it to be told. Well done everyone!!! Snowdrops

Zoe if you manage to find anything about Air Raid on Herne Hill/Dulwich area it would make interesting reading. Also anyone found anything about Cilly Ullman..............cilly might be sort for cecilia!

Yes Athena lovely pictures in paper, pity we cannot put them on here for others to see. I felt quite saddened to hear that Herta had been killed, hoping that we hear something back from SLP or Lambeth Archives I have written to them both.

Hi - yes I read this article in the South London Press, too. There were some lovely photos of Herta's family and her fiancee in a car with 3 of his buddies in Coney Island. He looked so happy. It is such a tragic story. I don't understand how their researchers failed to find what you all have uncovered by simply checking the obvious sites for deaths etc. Perhaps they were pushed for time and didn't manage to get that far before it went to print. Anyway, I bet they are thrilled to hear that their story has made such an impact on us all. It does sound like the sort of thing that would make a good TV drama! Let's hope the SLP respond soon - maybe they'll do a follow-up article! From past experience of writing to them on various topics, I do know that sometimes they do not acknowledge your emails/letters but then you find that your email/letter has been printed in the following issue! So, even if you don't hear back from them this week - check Friday's edition, Carol, as they may print something of your email in there.

I had a quick scour over the Times looking for relevant articles of air raids on 12th Spetember and it mention raids hitting hospitals and residential parts of SOuth/South East London. there was also one report from South LOndon of a house collapsing on top of an Anderson shelter with people inside. No names or specific locations tho - but there were definitely raids that night. I can't look them up again as I'm in the office and my TDA passwords are at home If I get a chance I may sneak to the library here and see if I can find copies of the daily Mirror from the 1940s to see what they say about it Zoe
