Wow! Adding to this as I want to know what response Carol gets back from the newspaper. What a sad story though...I thought her father was called Karl though? CWGC says Charles..... |

Carl and Karl can both be used as short names for Charles. I have a relative of whom i was aware of as Carl and was quite suprised to find his given name was Charles. Joan |

Karl is simply the German version of Charles - just as you get Carlo/Carlos in Italian/Spanish. Christine |

It might be a good idea to try and find out who lived at Croxted Road in East Dulwich at the time Herta came to stay, does anyone live near the local studies library, I would be surprised if they couldn't help, especially when they hear the story behind the address.....could lead to a name prehaps?.....wouldn't it be lovely if her belongings could be returned to a member of Herta's family..........Lilly |

on the ships manifest for 1938 the Herta on there was given as being 25 years old in 1938 she was born in Hanover, maybe this was a different person. |

Just a thought ...would it be worth getting in touch with the Archivist, Jon Newman? He might know the name of Herta's relatives and also the name of the people she went to work for, in Herne Hill. I almost feel as if Herta has been waiting for someone to find her.Perhaps Heinz is still alive.... Olde Crone |

Carol, you have really got all of us thinking, I have just spent half an hour googling, different things, as I am sure a lot of you have........you have given us a bone, and we an't letting go.......why wasn't the suit case destroyed, if she was injured in a air raid????? I can't find any air raids that happen on 12th September 1940 either????? this mystery is getting deeper.....I thinks...........this suitcase is waiting to go home.......Lilly |

What a sad story, but then there was so many during that time. It would be lovely to hand the suitcase back to her family and bring a sad story to a end (it will never be a happy ending but at least a peaceful one). I hope that her young man waiting in the usa was informed about her death, what a sad thought that he would have been waiting for her and thinking she had found someone else. lets hope that someone out there can reunite her belongs with the people who loved her please kep us informed |
