Ooooh, my Mum used torn-up bed sheets as well - but I don't think they could afford cotton wool, just used several thicknesses of cloth. She lived in a house with no running water, so on wash day all the water had to be drawn up from the well and put into a boiler in the wash house with a fire underneath to heat it (no electricity or gas either). Just imagine what an awful job it must have been washing them! Ugh. Makes our loops, belts and pins seem positively luxurious. Tina |

Oh dear, I remember the belts and loops, too. We had to go into the chemist's and ask for a packet of Dr. White's in hushed tones. No supermarkets in those days. (This was in the early 1960s, not the 18th century.) |

I remember when I was about 5 or 6 (50 ish years ago - I hate to admit) - my dad was a night watchman in some sort of cotton mill - anyway, I and my brother went to spend some time with him while he was at work. I went to the toilet and in there was a machine which said 'towels - 4d' - I thought my mum would like some new towels so asked my older brother if he had any pennies to add to mine so I could buy her some. SSSooo disappointing - - they had LOOPS - not the sort of nice 'hand-towels' that I had imagined. - My dad was distraught and made us promise we would not tell our mum - I didn't understand at the time, but wonder now if he ever told her the tale? Oh, Debs, lol! Reminds me - my mum shoved a packet at me and said out of the side of her mouth - put one of these on. Some little time later I had managed to tie the loops to the SIDES of my knickers...... OC |
