Phew, thought I was on my own here for a while! Thing is, when I tell them the news, I never hear from them again - not thankyou for putting me right, not even, No, you are wrong, I've got it all here, look. They just switch off and carry on regardless with their grafted-on trees - why???? I only have to have a HINT that I got a fact wrong and I'm scrabbling for the PRs, the GRO etc.I don't want to do someone else's tree, I want to do my own! How different we all are. OC |

Please can I become a fellow of your new society? Story (please stop reading here if you have been a member of GR for more than one week, as you will have read this before): 1965.......American man employs a professional UK researcher to find the marriage of his 4xg-grandparents in about 1790. He already knows the groom's name was Thomas Smith (lol) and the bride was Hannah. He knows where they lived after their marriage. The researcher cannot find an appropriate marriage in the most local 5 or 6 parishes, so he looks at the county marriage allegations, finds four with the right names and so picks the one where the marriage took place nearest to the place of residence. Unfortunately, in reality, the groom travelled 35 miles into the next county to get married. I have 100% proof that this is the correct marriage - I would stake my life on it (they are my 4xg-grandparents too!)! BUT.....the American man refuses to contemplate his ''professional'' could have made an error. This is bad enough, but it is HIS version of events that is bandied about the internet for all to see........and on quite a few different peoples trees - none of whom have responded to contact from me! If that wasn't bad enough, he also has MY 1796 family bible that has come to him via a second marriage. The people who wrote in it are not his relations......He said I could have it, except that he had paid for it to be ''renovated'' (omg), but when I offered him the money for it, he stopped writing! May I ask that you refuse membership to your society to any American's by the name of Smith?????? lol Merry |

Just had my seventh contact for one particular branch of my family which attracts much excited interest on here. Seven times I have had to tell the excited seeker that they cannot POSSIBLY be descended from this woman, because, according to the Burial Register,(which I have seen myself) she died aged 4, daughter of. She did NOT marry Joe Bloggs - where is the marriage that says she did? No one can produce it, but all KNOW that it happened! Five of these seven people have all got the same misinformation from a member of this Site. I have given this person the information that I have - why go on spreading it around? Cross Olde Crone |
