Please sign me up too. Wonderful though the internet is, information spreads so easily and mis information even faster. Person A in UK sends misinformation to Person B and cousin, Joe. Joe tells his cousin in Australia who makes contact with someone in UK, previously contacted by A.......and that's it. It must be fact. Even people the other side of the world have the same information, so it must be true. Does the Society give guidance re. making people understand that back in 1800s, dead men could not father children? Gwyn |

Sign me up..immediately, if not sooner. If I had a quid for every time I've seen the words ..'My Uncle/aunt/gran/neighbour's dog said..................', I'd have been the one buying GR instead of ITV getting their hands on it Reg |

I have a distant ancestor who left her husband and children and ran away with her husbands cousin. It's actually the husband and cousin who are related to me. She eventually married the cousin years later after her husband had died. I have had at least three members of her descendants (from her first marriage) contact me and they always have her as dying at the time she left hubby. I am also in contact with a descendant, and have been for some years, of the second marriage. There is no record of any death in the indexes and anyway I have a copy of her second marriage cert. I know it is the right person as her fathers name is quite unusual. They refuse to believe me even though I have offered to send them the proof. They were obviously brought up to believe this cock and bull story when she left home, probably her children were told that she had died. They just end contact. I asked one of them, why, if he wasnt prepared to maybe find a skeleton in the cupboard did he start looking into his family history. No answer! Margaret |

Oh OC, You are definately not on your own, I gave someone some info of a ggg grandmother we shared and she let me have a look at her tree, I could not believe the errors she had made, one woman had been put down marrying completely the wrong groom!!! One couple had the wrong children attached to them and when I tried to tell her she just didn't want to know and hasn't changed any details in her tree. She had got all her info from the IGI and the census records, not a single certificate to back up her research!! Fuzzy x |

Sign me up. My grandmother was Louisa Blacker from Midsummer Norton in Somerset. Blacker is quite an unusual name in these parts so you would think family history would be easy. However there was another Blacker family or a different branch of the same family who are everywhere, rootsweb, member submitted IGI records, ancestry world tree, buy one get one free at the co-op. Tesco's weekly special.. Who ever has been tracing this family has borrowed some of my relatives as well. Latest discovery was my great grandfather with age guessed from third marriage which would have made him eight when he married my great great grandmother in a Mormon sealing of the dead. However I did ask one of my relatives if I could have a family report instead of a gedcom and she has just airmailed me a 16 page family tree from Australia, bless, but it did make me feel a bit guilty |

Merry Perhaps 'SODMI' rolls a bit better? Jess Oh how wonderful - hope you provided a tree! (Bobbin, for the use of; but being a lady dog, the tree would be as useless to her as it would be to them!) Hmm, funny you should mention Membership Fees, I'm just having a think ...I shall email you all separately with a suggested price and whoever bites, that will set the cost. To be doubled next year, if I can get some idiot, erm, I mean member, to cough up. OC |

Why do people not use the box (field in computer terms) under 'Other details' which is headed 'Source' and the notes. I am happy to share my tree with any proved relation (however distant) but the 'source' box and notes tells them whether it is my own proved research; if certificated; the GRO reference; whether parish records seen; IGI entry from parish or researcher; data from another GR member; and so on. If they are a serious researcher they can then make up their minds whether the source is adequate or whether they need to do their own verification. |

can I join too please OC? As most of you know I haven't been doing this for long - so I don't want to pick up any misinformation. Not had any bad experiences as yet - worst query I've had was along the lines of 'was your sarah? married to ....' no year mentioned, and I had about 5 sarah? in my tree at the time Barbara |

lol Jess - good to see you back. can I join to please OC? There is one lady on here Emma Colwood who is a direct ancestor of mine. She remarried, and some people have her in their tree as Emma Colwood (widow at time of mirriage). I have e-mailed them because there may not be a very strong link but I thought that they may like a copy of the marriage cert. I got a message back saying that the info I have wasn't right, when I can prove it as a fact that it is right - there is only 1 Emma Colwood marriage on the whole of ancestry. So, how much is the membership fee? lol. |
