No, no. I am definitely not going to buy my gear from the chandlers. What kind of girl do you think I am? I am sticking out for the genuine pukka thong.

Angela

Angela Report 20 Jul 2006 10:57

Chandlers don't only sell chandles. They do sell some very lovely clothing too - nice boots, oilies and lifejackets, etc. Not too sure whether the rope would be quite spangly enough for me though. Maybe if I Google 'very large spangly thongs' I might come up with something. On the other hand, I may come up with more than I bargained for!!

I'd like to join up, but until OneWorldTree and the 'let's have a bit of fun' trees on GenesReunited are banned, I'm afraid that the society will never get off the ground. When I started out with this researching, I thought that everyone else was doing the same because they were interested in their personal histories, however it would appear that there are some out there who wish to rewrite their personal histories to suit. (Candidates might include a famous author / politician and the soon to be ex wife of a famous musician). Short of developing a time machine to travel back and validate every piece of information that we are told 'is obviously true', there has to be an element of doubt in most extended trees. All we can do is continually review our trees and crosscheck each piece of data that we encounter to ensure that we have a tree that we consider to be an honest representation of the truth.

Angela, re thong size 142 - may be best to give John Lewis a miss and see if there are any boatyard chandlers in the area where you could buy something erm, suitable for your size.

Well done. That sounds much better. Wish I could join you. But ... next week ... if the weather holds ... I will be joining you because tomorrow I GIVE UP WORK FOR EVER. Yippee!! Must nip down to John Lewis Sale for late night shopping to purchase suitable spangly thong. Do they do them in a size 142?

No, no, Merry. You can't be a couch potato in this weather. You will have to borrow one of Glen's spare tinsel thongs and become the GR Tips Board Resident Sunlounger Potato.

Morning, Crone. Sign me up as a lifetime member of SPODOM please. I have had lots of spurious information from other members. One couple managed to get married 50 years before they were born. Quite a feat I would say.

What's In A Name? A new panel show in which contestants have to obtain a full family history from 1841 onwards, using only census information. The winner is the panel member who can do the full set, all of which have the correct, contemporary spelling of the family name. Other panel members can score points by spotting that Donne, Dunn, Dunne and Done are obviously not the same family because the family name is definitely Down. OC

My great grandfather died age 8 months. Nobody believes he is not my great grandfather, except his siblings' descendants. I have found the correct one and would really like to change his headstone but somebody found the other birth and ran with that. I've bought marraige cert that shows I'm correct and death cert of the wrong one, but still can't convince them. Don't know what you do. Some people are just pains!

Phoenix

Phoenix Report 19 Jul 2006 22:39

Peal or no Peal The contestants are given a budget of £6.99 and attempt to obtain full details of marriages not on the IGI without buying certificates. Most of the programme is taken up with the amusing ways the contestants find of travelling across country without using petrol or paying fares. (The series is finally pulled when it is realised that every episode has closed with a close up of the contestants' faces when they are told that the marriage took place in a registry office.)

Guinevere Report 19 Jul 2006 22:25

Let's hear it for my gt gt grandfather who managed to father 2 children long after his death, strangely no birth certs can be found and his widow doesn't seem to have them with her on any census. But it's on the IGI so it must be right. And for his father who, so gencircles says, was born in Germany. He managed to make it back to Suffolk for his christening 3 days later, though. Gwynne
