this is interesting too Sniptools » TutorialsUninstall/Remove Norton Antivirus completeley September 22, 2004 Views (87,502) / / Trackback (0) So you want to use Grisoft’s AVG Free as your antivirus, but had Norton antivirus installed before, which is now proving more persistent than a flatulent release in a bath, with Symantec’s whole convoluted shebang only compounding your woes? Well below is a simple sureshot way to get rid of Norton for good. First, from Start —> Cpanel —> Add/Remove programs, remove every trace of Norton and its associated programs, which means scan through the list of installed programs for any item that says “Norton” or “Symantec” or “LiveUpdate” - for example “Symantec LiveUpdate” or “Norton AntiVirus 2003”. When you are absolutely sure that these vermins are gone, it is VITAL that you reboot the computer. When you are back into XP, delete the following folders manually - if they don’t exist that’s fine: c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus c:\Program Files\Norton c:\Program Files\Symantec c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared Do a SHIFT DELETE if possible, the folders don’t go into your Recycle Bin in that case, so they are gone from your computer for sure. After the above, I usually clean the Windows Registry for any entries that are lying around stray. Get a Registry Cleaner like HoverDesk’s RegSeeker (zipped download) and use the “Clean the Registry” option. Once that is done and you have SELECTED ALL and deleted the stray items, reboot again. To be sure. Norton should be gone when your machine is back up. If not, Symantec has a brute force utility called RNAV2003 - get it here, which ought to do the rest of the scavenging, but it shouldn’t come to that. OC you MUST remove Norton or the 2 together will cause you probs. Click on START at bottom LH corner, Click on Control panel Find 'Add or Remove programs' Click on and search list for NORTON Click ONCE on it to highlight it You will see on RHS ..... change/remove Click on that and then confirm you want to remove the Norton You will then have to restart your computer to make sure all the bits of it have been removed. Kat Just because it says it expires it doesn't mean they will remove it from your computer, anyway they will maybe give you a few more days free to think about it. |

We've had AVG for years and never had a problem, it updates itself regularly and is user friendly. I can't imagine that a paid for one could do any better. |

I have had both Norton and McAfee at different times and both seemed fine. So fine in fact, that when my computer suddenly turned itself overnight into a Public Service computer, I still didnt twig that I needed antivirus, or spyware. The result was that I lost EVERYTHING - fortunately I am rather lazy about clearing emails, so a lot of family history correspondence was still in my H---mail account. However, my database of 10,000 or so names is trapped inside the old computer and I am having to face the prospect of manually transferring each and every entry - I darent try to make a CD of it in case it transfers nasties with it. A winter job, I think. OC |

Free does NOT mean sub-standard. The free ones are offered by leading companies as a marketing tool. If someone gets good performance from a free version they may well recommend it in a business environment. The virus definition databases are thus the same. It would be madness to offer anything less. If you tour the online computing world as I do it is awash with Norton problems. AVG and AVAST are the ones I would go for. AVG does seem to have more problems with the updates. Back up with online scans from Housecall and Panda and you won't go far wrong. Bob |

Yeah, make sure you install the free one - first one I installed was the 30 day free trial of the paid one - so after 30 days I had to uninstall it and put the proper free one on (just saves a bit of hassle in the future). But it DOES update regularly and I've found it to be fantastic! Snowdrops |

My puter was wiped out when I had paid for Mcaffees installed. The engineer who was a microsoft certified one told me to dump Mcaffee and put on avg7. The first time I ran it it found 2 trojans and a virus the paid for mcaffee hadnt found. So then I did dump it and put on avg. It updates itself at least once a day. |
