In the middle age portugese named this city Mogador (probably a deformed name from Sidi Mogdoul a local marabout. Jewish people had a special status called 'negociants du roi' and they are negotiating goods arriving for the Sultan, they even had a monopolistic situation to sell wheat to christians while muslims are not authorized.
