Well on 1891 census is as follows: Name: Benjamin Standring Age: 64 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827 Relation: Head Spouses's Name: Elizabeth Gender: Male Where Born: Rochdale, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Failsworth Ecclesiastical parish: St John Town: Failsworth County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Prestwich Sub registration district: Failsworth ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Joseph Hall Baskett 15 Ann Standring 13 Benjamin Standring 64 Elizabeth Standring 61 Harriett Standring 16 Oswald Standring 17 Just strange, I can't find a marraige for Elizabeth potts and Benjamin Standring. As you can see Harriet is known as Standring here, whereas in 1881 census she is known as potts the same as elizabeth. I know for a fact that the other children here are children of Ann and Benjamin. Another strange thing is that she is his servant, when he is a coal miner. Thx Nicola x |

Nicola, I'm not sure if you have looked at the image or just the transcription. The members of the household are listed in the following order: Benjamin Standing Head Widr 50 Labourer in Coal Mine (sorry, can't make out birthplace) Ed Do Son 14 Horse Driver Do Failsworth Jessie Do Son 10 Scholar Do Oswald Do Son 7 Do Do Ann Do Daug 3 -- Do Elizabeth Potts Serv Mar 47 serv Bedfordshire Harriott Do Daug 6 Scholar Stockport So, that suggests that Benjamin's wife (mother of Ann) had died between 1877 and 1881. Elizabeth should have a husband Mr. Potts who is not in the same household on census night, and Harriott's 'relationship to head of household' should almost certainly have been given as 'servant's daughter' rather than just 'daughter' but it is a common mistake on censuses. If you can get the birth certificate(s) for one or more of the Standing children it will give their mother's name(s). Or you could try looking for the family on the 1871 census; she should be on that one? Kate. |

Hi If this is the 1881 census then the 1854 marriage seems a bit early. Maybe they never married but he 'recognised' her children? Maybe they married secretly so she kept her maiden name. There was a story once of a chap who married his servant and they lived in the same house etc, - can't think of his name though. Jill |

Name: Ann Standing Age: 3 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878 Relation: Daughter Father's name: Benjamin Gender: Female Where Born: Failsworth Civil parish: Failsworth County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: Wicken Tree Lane Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Prestwich Sub registration district: Failsworth ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth Potts 47 Harriott Potts 6 Ann Standing 3 Benjamin Standing 50 Ed. Standing 14 Jessie Standing 14 Oswall Standing 7 Now I'm confused, could it be possible that benjamin married his servant? As dates for Ann, Harriet Oswald and Ann Match up. I found a marraige for Benjamin Standring and Elizabeth Hornby in 1854 Rochdale. Any thoughts on this thx Nicola x |
