Thanks again Mike. I can't remember where I found reference to Ann Ripton's marriage. I scribbled it on a piece of paper a few years back (before I realised how important it was to keep a record of all sources). I think I will definatly go to Kew (I was also surprised that the professional couldn't find it). Thanks for taking the time to have a look - it's appreciated. If I ever find George or Thomas I'll update this message. Update: 18th May. Went to TNA yesterday to look for George's military records, and I didn't have any sucess. I may have to accept that George is going to be a brick wall. |

Greeting’s again……… Caroline. I find that surprising that the “ Professionals “ Said they could NOT find Army records….. On the 71,81. Census is clearly states George was a “ Colour Sergeant W. & S. Militia “ b Leicester. 1891. = Pensioner. Manager of Bakehouse. ( Seeing Louse's occupation stated Confectioner ) 1901. = Army Pensioner. I would pack a few sandwiches & a flask And go to Kew yourself Records have improved over the years. … I’ve had another whiz round by disks …… Re:~ Your Ann’s marriage in Syston 1824. ? Ummm ? …… It did not show on my Parish Registers for Syston for that Date. I have the following :~ St. Peter’s & Paul Parish Church. Syston. Ann REPTON. ~ Mathew Toon. 29th. December. 1834. Both of this Parish By Banns. The above record appeared on two disks. plus on line Records 'Phillimores early Marriages'. .... Had another look for Thomas Marriage. ? Closest hits :~ St, Mary de Castro Parish Church Leicester. Thomas RIPPIN. Mary Gil. 7th. February. 1813. By Banns. MIKE. |

Mike, thanks for your reply. And for pointing out what a big task it'd be looking for George at the Leicester Records Office. I did think of trying to trace him through his military service record. At the time I wasn't able to get to Kew, so I used a private researcher - who was recommended on TNA website. Sadly they couldn't find any of his records. I haven't completly given up though and plan to go to Kew myself to have a look. I do know he was definatley in the army as I have his marriage certificate and some of his children's birth certificates. I did once find an Ann Ripton, who married in Syston, Leicestershire in 1824. Thanks though for having a look for him on the census. You're prossibly right about his father being a military man (though his occupation on George's marriage cert was Groom), that would explain why we can't find him I guess. |

Greeting’s & Welcome…….. Caroline. I’m sorry to say like your good self I failed to Find either George or Thomas his Father on any Census returns before 1871. Even using “ search Wild Cards” & different spellings. I just had a feeling that Thomas was also a Military Man ? But was not able to find them at known locations of Barracks, within the City / Country of Leicester. I think your proposed visit to the Records Office would be a mammoth task. ……….. Seeing that there was Five principle Parishes within the City at this time..... Then to trawl through these would not be completed within one sitting. Plus the information if you are successful would be basic Date, Christian Name, Name of Parents. Address, Occupation of Father. Or just Father / Mothers name if born out of wedlock. Have you thought of coming at it from another angle ?....... Through George’s Army Service Records ? This would mean visiting the National Archive Office. Kew. London Useful search hints & tips can be gained from visiting their web site:~ www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm Browse this site plus…… Follow the link to “ More Army History……” Good Luck in your search. If your require help again just ask on here. MIKE. |

George Ripton, born about 1828 in Leicester (died 1910 Bury St Edmunds). I have found him on the 1871-1901 census (won't find him in 1851 & 61 as he was serving abroad in the army). On each entry he states his place of birth as Leicester or Leicestershire. From his marriage certificate I know that his father's name was Thomas Ripton. I can't find him or Thomas on the 1841 census, and haven't yet been able to get to Leicester to go through the Parish Records. This is a long shot, but I thought I would add him onto this thread in case anyone came across him in their searches. |

Thanks Mike I believe that this John probably is my great grandfather although I do not recognise the names of the other two people, I was half expecting him to have been buried with his wife Hannah (nee Yates) or his son Alfred (1868 - 1940) and his daughter Emma (1870 - c1948).! Regards Ken |
