The first time I saw the name Jabez I wondered if the person who registered him had a cold and the child should have been called James! No I didnt really wonder that, I realised it was a biblical name, but I had not come across it before in genealogy.

For an unusual fore-name what about mine, at least as far as you Poms are concerned! It is the Maori name for an extinct New Zealand bird. My sisters were also given bird names. Tui, Riro and Tiora.

ive loads of hebrew names in my tree, i always thought i wonder if they were of jewish origin, but no they just liked the names i suppose. ive rec discovered some more like septimus and his brother optimus.

Septimus would have been the seventh child and Optimus the eighth I guess.

I've just googled the name of the guy who built our houses daughter, Keturah. It was one I hadn't seen befor and apparently she was the second wife of Isaac. Her name meant Incense.

Keturah Green was however,known as Kate.

I did once find a Mafeking in the birth indexes. I can only assume his mother was relieved when he was born!

Janet,

Septimus does mean the seventh but Octavus/Octavia would be the eighth. Optimus means the best.
