Oops! Had another look at the marriage cert. this monring. The lady in question was called Jane CHIDY (no 'e'). She was 19 in 1880 and her father was called Henry CHIDY and he was a brick layer. The lighterman was another member of the family (COLLYER). I think the Shoreditch thing was right though. If she was a CHIDGEY, how do I know that I have the right one when I find her? |

I just looked on the IGI site. I put in the surname Chidy with just British Isles and up came quite a lot of people with Chidy, Chiddy and variants. Some were in London and I've spotted an Elizabeth Jane Chiddy 1838 Shoreditch daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Chiddey. Now if I were doing your tree that would make me wonder if Henry and Elizabeth could be the grandparents of your Jane. I'd be writing myself a pencilled note that they could have had a son Henry. There doesn't seem to be one in the same batch though. No proof but a hint perhaps. I suspect that this is a variant of Chidgey but it does look as if Chidy and similar names were around in London. This means any move from Somerset is likely to have been generations before censuses perhaps. Good luck with this one. It looks to me as if your only option is to trawl through any parish registers for Shoreditch hoping to find all the Chidys then fitting them together. Sue |

I thought I'd found your Henry in 1871 visiting his brother. Note his mother is in the same house. But this Henry is unmarried when I looked at the actual image. I'm so pleased you found her! It's such a buzz when you finally find someone, and hopefully it will lead to the wider family for you. I'm so glad we were all able to help. |
