I have just received my Aunt's death certificate dated 24th January 1979. Her address was 25 Glynne Street, Queensferry, Deeside, Clwyd and the name of the informant was Dorothy Sherratt - Daughter-in-law. I didn't think my Aunt had any children but she obviously did have a son. Is there any way I can find out who else would have been living at that address in Wales. Do they have the same sort of Electoral Roll as England?

What was your aunts name & who did she marry? Have you checked the birth records for the birth of any children she may have had? Georgina.

My Aunt married a John Albert Sherratt in 1914 in Poplar. I have searched the records for all sorts of spellings and found nothing except one birth just before they married in West Ham but it was a girl. I may get the certificate but I don't think it is her daughter. It is obviously a son I am looking for - I thought if I could find out who else was living at this address it may help. Annie obviously went to live there after her husband died in 1956. Jo

Jo - don't know about electoral roles - but the death certificate will give you her age when she died. If it were me I would look for her marriage and the birth (quarter by quarter) on Ancestry. You presumably know Dorothy's maiden name which will make both searches a lot easier and surer. Victoria

Sorry just realised I had still not given her name it was Annie Eliza Sherratt (formerly Manning) Jo

Victoria - As you can see I have just added she married in 1914. I feel I am banging my head against a brick wall as I have gone through the births methodically looking at every sort of spelling on ancestry and nothing. I do not know Dorothy's maiden name as it only states Dorothy Sherratt and Daughter inlaw. I have searched for a marriage for a Sherratt in Poplar and found one in 1938 for a John A. Sherratt (which I thought was promising) to an Annie E. Adams (thought it funny it was the same name as his mother). I have searched for a birth for any children of them but am up to 1948 now and no children so far. By the way Annie Eliza Sherratt was 92. Jo

Might the daughter-in-law be the wife of a STEP-son? Jay

Jo, Annie was born in 1887 & married in 1914 so she would have been about 27 when she married, could she have had a child before she got married? Have you searched the full birth indexes on Ancestry? Her husband may have been away in WW1 so they may have had a child after 1918 when the war ended? Georgina.

The marriage cert of 1914 may shed some light on it if the hubby was a widower when they married the daughter in law then might be a step DIL Did the death cert give Dorothy's address Shirley

Annie Eliza Manning was 27 and a spinster and John Albert Sherratt was aged 28 and a batchelor. I don't think Dorothy is a stepson's wife. The birth of Florence Sherratt in 1914 and Frederick G. Sherrett 1912 I am unsure of. I think because I found a marriage entry of a John A. Sherratt in 1938 makes me think that would be their son (same name as the father). However I have been searching for the birth of a John A. Sherratt and still cannot find anything. I have just found a death for a Dorothy Jane Sherratt in Flintshire East, Clwyd in 1996 and have taken the chance of ordering the certificate in the hope it is the Dorothy that is on Annie's death certificate My daughter has suggested that as I cannot find the birth could they have adopted the child. If so would they rename a child giving it the name of the father adopting it?

That looks interesting Shirley perhaps I will trawl the records to find a marriage for Frederick. Many thanks

Frederick G Sherratt married Beatrice I Horton in the June quarter 1936 in West Ham ref no:4a-214. There is always a chance that Dorothy was a second wife? Georgina.

Thanks for that Georgina - I am just trawling the marriage records now but hadn't got that far. It is weird that there is also one for John A. Sherratt in 1938 married to Annie E. Adams - I have searched for children for them until 1950 and nothing. Perhaps they have married again. Will have to wait and see what is on Dorothy's death certificate. Jo

I'd be very tempted to order the birth certs for Florence and Frederick to confirm the parents. Good luck, Selena
