Argyllgran thank you, I didn't know about the eldest daughter Esther.
It's sad really, I was born in Chatham and still living there when Esther junior died. For 31 years we lived in the same place, yet I had no idea she existed. Our paths may have crossed and neither of us knew. I have found this a lot with my recent Olley ancestors, yet my Grandad Frederick, who was a friendly and talkative man who I was close to, never even mentioned them.

You say there were two children, and the eldest child was born in January 1928.
No, they had three, and the eldest was born in 1925:
Births Sep 1925 (>99%) Olley Esther M Scerri Medway 2a 1311
The family in 1939 - the closed record will be Esther, whose death hasn't been picked up:
Charles J Olley in the 1939 England and Wales Register Name Charles J Olley Gender Male Marital Status Married Birth Date 21 Apr 1899 Residence Date 1939 Address The Cottages Shotley Gate Residence Place Samford, Suffolk, England Occupation Rn Chief Petty Officer Line Number 29 Schedule Number 206 Sub Schedule Number 1 Enumeration District Txkr Borough Samford Registration district 212-1 Inferred Spouse Ethel M Olley Inferred Children Charles J Olley Sheila D Olley Household Members (Name) Gender Charles J Olley Male Ethel M Olley Female - 5/4/1899 [ name is Esther on image: correction submitted] This record is officially closed. [ this is the daughter Esther ] Charles J Olley Male - 16/1/1928 Sheila D Olley Female - 16 /1/1929
Esther (1925) married in Chatham in 1953, but must have divorced, as both she and her husband married other people in 1972.
Her death:

That narrows the timespan for Charles J's marriage date to 1921-25

Thank you all for your comments.
Erika I did look on FamilySearch, it said 0 results when I searched for her name, and their Maltese marriages don't cover the right period.
Maddie - yes that's him.
Nameless - yes I would imagine they met while he was in port in Malta.
Shirley - yes that's him. His brother Frederick was my Grandad. I'll have another look at TNA, I've never actually purchased from them so it'll be an experiment no matter what I can get.
Thank you all for your input.

I used to trot off to Kew with my list. Was so pleased when you could get the navy record sheet on FMP. So fascinating to see all the ships they had served in. Found a website that listed where they were so you could match dates.

I went to Kew many years ago and found my grandfather, and his brother, army records when they served late 1890,s and were in the second boar war
It maybe at that time fmp and ancestry hadnt transcribed the original first page records
FMP does have the transcription but not his full records

I’ve previously.been able to see the actual document on FMP ( which I don’t have anymore). The National Archives used to point you to FMP - don’t they do that anymore?
Added: just checked out some of those I have and see I’m out of date. I wonder when the NA stopped the arrangement with FMP.?

That would explain why he was in Malta.
The marriage may be in the Armed Forces marriage records on FMP

Good Morning All
I wonder if anybody has access to BMD records from Malta, and would mind looking something up for me?
I had a Great Uncle, Charles John Olley, who shows in 1939 as being married to Esther M Olley (maiden name not shown of course). I couldn't find any record of him marrying in the UK. They had 2 children, when I checked their birth record the Mother's maiden name is Scerri, which I found by googling is probably Maltese.
From her death record I can see her full name was Esther Mary SCERRI, born 5/4/1899. I am hoping to find (well hoping somebody can find for me) a record of when and where they married. In the 1921 census he said he was single, their eldest child was born in January 1928, so the marriage is likely to be between these 2 dates.
Thanks in advance
Duncan
