CORRECTION -
At 11:20 I said that Margaret was in Dalkeith, Edinburgh in 1901.
My mistake - she was in Dalkeith, Orkney.
Spotted it myself, then Mike also PM'd:
"her father was primarily a farmer with shops, he had land on sanday stronsay and papa stronsay. The census say one thing other official documents ie deaths births another The Dalkeith you refer to is in Orkney my grandfather lived there. Generations of my own family built boats but they were primarily farmers "

Continuing on - though I'm sure Mike has all this -
John Wallace in the 1861 Scotland Census Name: John Wallace Age: 42 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1819 Relationship: Head Spouse's Name: Jane Wallace Gender: Male Where born: Cross, Orkney Registration Number: 31 Registration district: Stronsay Civil parish: Stronsay County: Orkney Address: No 11 Occupation: Ag Lab ED: 6 Household schedule number: 16 Line: 22 Roll: CSSCT1861_4 Household Members Age Relationship John Wallace 42 Head Jane Wallace 52 Wife Eliza Wallace 11 Daughter
John Wallace in the 1871 Scotland Census Name: John Wallace Age: 53 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818 Relationship: Head Spouse's Name: Jane Wallace Gender: Male Where born: Cross, Orkney Registration Number: 31 Registration district: Stronsay Civil parish: Stronsay County: Orkney Address: 12 Village Occupation: Grocer <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ED: 6 Household schedule number: 15 Line: 19 Roll: CSSCT1871_6 Household Members Age Relationship John Wallace 53 Head Jane Wallace 55 Wife Margaret Wallace 7 Grandaughter (Granddaughter)
The grand-daughter is the girl listed as step-daughter to Robert in 1881.
It does seem, though, that Robert (Barbara's father) , who was born in Edinburgh, changed occupation from shale miner to grocer when he moved to Orkney. No doubt he had to - there's not much call for shale miners in Orkney.
Perhaps he took over from Barbara's father John, who was a grocer by 1871??
Robert and Margaret's marriage . Their daughter Elizabeth (in 1881 census) was born in West Calder:
28 January 1870 at 6 Tay Street, West Calder. Robert Watt, shale miner, bachelor, 19. Parents: Robert Watt, tailor, and Margaret Watt, ms Brown.
Margaret Wallace, domestic servant, spinster, 22. Parents: John Wallace, spirit merchant, and Jane Wallace, ms Scott.
AHA! Reason for the Garrioch name - it was Barbara's grandmother's surname. Death of her father:
WALLACE JOHN 81 mmn GARRIOCH 1899 031/ 8 Stronsay

You say Barbara's father's occupation had changed.
In 1881 he's a grocer. In 1891 he was a "grocer, baker and farmer". In 1898 he was a grocer. In 1901 he's not with Margaret, but Margaret (then living in Dalkeith, Edinburgh) is a "Grocer merchant's wife".
No change there, to my mind.
Robert seems to be in Stronsay in 1901, with son Robert, and listed as "farmer" - but he was also a farmer in 1891, and in small crofting communities most people had (still have) more than one job.
Barbara's husband David has the same place and year of birth as the one who was lodging with her family.
Strangely, I don't see any record of Margaret's death - unless it's this one:
WATT [also listed as WALLACE ] MARGARET JANE 83 mmn SCOTT 1928 031/ 9 Stronsay
but this is her probate:
Margaret Ann Rendall Wallace Watt in the Scotland, National Probate Index (Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories), 1876-1936 Name: Margaret Ann Rendall Wallace Watt Death Date: 13 May 1928 Death Place: Stronsay Confirmation Date: 26 Jun 1928 Confirmation Place: Kirkwall, Scotland
WATT, Margaret Ann Rendall Wallace or [Watt], Eden Villa, Stronsay, Orkney, died 13 May 1928 at Stronsay, testate. Confirmation Kirkwall, 26 June to Ann Livingstone Watt, Eden Villa aforesaid, Executrix. Will dated 12 February 1919 ,recorded Kirkwall 25 June 1928. Value of estate: £2127 : 2 : 1.
Ann Livingstone Watt is her daughter, born 1884 Sanday, and died unmarried, 1973 Aberdeen.

Thank you for your help. The information I was given was wrong she ws not on the 1901 or 1911 census for sanday. I managed to find a marriage certificate on line for Watt/Dearness She appears to have adopted a middle name, her mother has more middle names, her father has a different occupation and it is all suspect. I know a David Dearness worked as a servant for her father. Her adopted middle name is an old orcadian family. I have contacted a member here about their family tree and hope to get some clarification

To put my own mind at rest, I've had a look at the marriage cert, and it IS the correct one:
21 September 1898, at 7 Laverockbank Terraced, Trinity, Leith. David Dearness, cab driver, bachelor, 28.
David's address: 14 North Junction St, Leith. Parents: David Dearness, crofter, and Jessie Dearness, ms Muir
Barbara G Watt, spinster, 21.
Barbara's address: 4 Admiralty Street, Leith. Parents: Robert Watt, master grocer, and Margaret Ann Randall Watt, ms Wallace.
So the 1901 and 1911 censuses and 1955 death are the right ones, but probably not the ER . Not sure about the burial - though it's the same year as the death, so could be OK. There's no other death of a Barbara Dearness in Scotland in 1955.

That's what I thought, and so, looking at this again in the cold light of day, I now don't think that the 1950 ER which I posted last night is for the correct woman, and possibly not the burial either.
There was a Barbara Watt Dearness born in Edinburgh/Leith in 1917, who died in 1950, and is probably the woman on the 1950 ER.
Two of that name were born in 1928 (or maybe one registered in both Edinburgh and Leith) - one or both of whom may be this woman:
MS Barbara W Dearness in the UK, Electoral Registers, 2003-2010 Name: MS Barbara W Dearness Birth Date: 1927-1929 Residence Date: 2005-2010 Address: 1/2, Pier Place, EH6 4LP Residence Place: Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
To make matters more confusing, there were Dearness families on Sanday in various censuses, and these deaths:
DEARNESS BARBARA 66 1944 026/ 2 Sanday
DEARNESS BARBARA 43 1919 026/ 8 Sanday
The 1898 marriage cert is needed, to see if it's the correct one or not - but the Dearness family in 1901 seems very feasible and David Dearness was lodging with Barbara Watt's family in 1891.
