Continuing on - though I'm sure Mike has all this -
John Wallace in the 1861 Scotland Census Name: John Wallace Age: 42 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1819 Relationship: Head Spouse's Name: Jane Wallace Gender: Male Where born: Cross, Orkney Registration Number: 31 Registration district: Stronsay Civil parish: Stronsay County: Orkney Address: No 11 Occupation: Ag Lab ED: 6 Household schedule number: 16 Line: 22 Roll: CSSCT1861_4 Household Members Age Relationship John Wallace 42 Head Jane Wallace 52 Wife Eliza Wallace 11 Daughter
John Wallace in the 1871 Scotland Census Name: John Wallace Age: 53 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818 Relationship: Head Spouse's Name: Jane Wallace Gender: Male Where born: Cross, Orkney Registration Number: 31 Registration district: Stronsay Civil parish: Stronsay County: Orkney Address: 12 Village Occupation: Grocer <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ED: 6 Household schedule number: 15 Line: 19 Roll: CSSCT1871_6 Household Members Age Relationship John Wallace 53 Head Jane Wallace 55 Wife Margaret Wallace 7 Grandaughter (Granddaughter)
The grand-daughter is the girl listed as step-daughter to Robert in 1881.
It does seem, though, that Robert (Barbara's father) , who was born in Edinburgh, changed occupation from shale miner to grocer when he moved to Orkney. No doubt he had to - there's not much call for shale miners in Orkney.
Perhaps he took over from Barbara's father John, who was a grocer by 1871??
Robert and Margaret's marriage . Their daughter Elizabeth (in 1881 census) was born in West Calder:
28 January 1870 at 6 Tay Street, West Calder. Robert Watt, shale miner, bachelor, 19. Parents: Robert Watt, tailor, and Margaret Watt, ms Brown.
Margaret Wallace, domestic servant, spinster, 22. Parents: John Wallace, spirit merchant, and Jane Wallace, ms Scott.
AHA! Reason for the Garrioch name - it was Barbara's grandmother's surname. Death of her father:
WALLACE JOHN 81 mmn GARRIOCH 1899 031/ 8 Stronsay

CORRECTION -
At 11:20 I said that Margaret was in Dalkeith, Edinburgh in 1901.
My mistake - she was in Dalkeith, Orkney.
Spotted it myself, then Mike also PM'd:
"her father was primarily a farmer with shops, he had land on sanday stronsay and papa stronsay. The census say one thing other official documents ie deaths births another The Dalkeith you refer to is in Orkney my grandfather lived there. Generations of my own family built boats but they were primarily farmers "
