If the mother isn't married when the child is born then you enter the child's surname as that of the mother's. If the child goes on to take the surname of a stepfather then you can enter this in the notes panel (pop out on the right hand side of screen). If the child was always known by the stepfather's surname from very young then use that surname but put the birth name (mother's) in the notes panel. |

If the baby is a boy and the mother knows who the father is, she may well have named him after the father, with the father's surname as the boy's middle name. |

If the father isn’t officially named, you enter the child as the mother’s offspring and leave the father as unknown |
