Re Principal Street -

for example -

William Hodge Brooks(born c1869) lived on the north side of Principal Street in 1881, on Main Street in 1891.

Edward Smith Ford (c1853) was on Principal Street, (south side) in 1881, on Main Street in 1891, and in Wellington Terrace, Fore Street in 1911.

Ellen Harvey (c1846) was on the north side of Principal Street in 1881, on Main Street in 1891, and in Chestnut Cottages, Fore Street in 1911.

So I'm sure Fore Street was called Principal Street in 1881 census (and Main Street in 1891) - but that doesn't help find which house was No 31 , unfortunately!

Even looking at the 1911 census, the households on Fore Street all just say "Fore Street" - no numbers.

Some of the houses on Fore Street in 1911 have names, but not helpful in relating to No 31.
Some houses have sub-addresses - eg - Albany Terrace, Fore Street, or Bradley Terrace, Fore Street. Again, not helpful.

31 Fore Street is almost at the junction of Fore Street and Daccabridge Road (per Google Maps).

Fore St goes across the end of Daccabridge Road and joins Barnhill Road.

I can't see Fore Street in Kingskerswell in 1881.

There's a Principal Street - could that be it by a different name? Fore Street would have been the main (or principal) road.
On the 1881 census it's in the same area as School Road, Daccabridge Road, Water Lane, Torquay Road.

However, even if it's the correct road, the houses aren't numbered, and it seems impossible to know which is which.

Library or archive local to the house address should have some information.

If you want to give the address, members here could look up in the 1881 census.

It's worth bearing in mind that streets were renamed and / or renumbered sometimes.

Take a note of neighbours and proximity to buildings of note, eg. churches, pubs etc. to help ensure that you follow the correct address.

Anybody know how I can find out the history of a house, or even who lived there in 1881?
