I have found two entry's in the birth records different names but same mother and father and same year but one has an 'a' after the page no and is hand written. Does anyone know what this means?

Would have to look at it to try and see why

A usually means an amendment was done at some time

Can you give names and year

Without looking at the records, not possible to offer an opinion

Are the entries on freebmd?

Maybe as simple the parents wasn't married at the time of registration,,,,,but both present then allowing the father to give consent but did infact marry later,.

It was and still is a usual move.

Another could be ,the birth was entered with a wrong index,,,,or appeared in another month or year,,,the surname wasn't spelt right.

so many reasons to have a suffix against the indexes,,,,,,
