I read most of the posts on here, as it is very informative, and you learn a lot, but something I have noticed is that you are able to provide comprehensive details of marriages and banns.
My question is, where do you get this information, I just purchase the certificate if I am more sure than not that I have the right person, but is there somewhere like for example FMP that I should maybe subscribe to where I could get the information myself.

Various images are available on different sites, ie London marriages and banns for a certain date range can be seen on Anc' and are incredibly helpful if you have London ancestors, FMP has Parish marriages for lots of areas,

FreeReg is also good for early baptisms, marriages and burials, although it is still a work in process as volunteers transcribe Parish Registers

A very useful site is FS, in particular, the collections at:

You can only view some images at an FHS centre - these are scattered across England (and the world)
If the rego's are from the locality of the FHS site, they probably already have films there.
But in any case, I can rent films from their library to view at any specified FHS centre.
I usually make a donation (on top of the rental fee) if I take a pic of some page.
You can call beforehand to discus stuff.
Not all the collections are indexed, and even some indexed collections are incompletely indexed at present so you might have to browse the images to find the one you want,
Bishop's Transcripts amd Archdeacon's Transcripts are the church's own back-up record.

The 2 Wm's are my wife's ancestors, so I need to know where to find the 1845 baptism - i.e., what parish is Coxhoe in?
So I check the census
The NA uses the code ho107 for 1841/51, and rg9 thru rg14 fpr 1861 thru 1911 respectively.
So I look up Coxhoe at:

The image shows Wm (bp 16/11/1845) was the 2nd son of William Benson, pitman, & Isabella (late Douglas), of Coxhoe Long Row

There are 2 things of note - Wm is the 2nd son, and Isabella's maiden surname was Douglas.
(In Cockermouth, his mum died 1852q2 and his dad wed Eliz Cliff 1853q1)
C of E baptismal and burial registers were standardized in 1812.
The post-1812 rego's had no col for date of birth/death.
They were records of the baptismal/burial ceremony.
Sometimes the d.o.b. is recorded in the margin, but d.o.d. is much rarer - I've found that more often a marginal notation in a burial rego relates to grave location,
Although it's beyond the parish rego scope, it's worth noting that municipal cemeteries also note date of burial rather than death.
