Hello,
An ancestor, Thomas Foster was living in a place called Gulleys Ope - North Street, Exeter (1851 Census).
On the 1861 census it is shown as Gullicks Hope - Lower North Street, Exeter.

Does anyone have any local knowledge and can tell me which is the correct spelling?
It looks like it could have been a row of houses or a court as opposed to a name of a house.

In 1851, it comes between nos 2 and 3 North Street, and in 1861 it's between nos 2 and 3 Lower North Street.

Maybe some sort of alley or courtyard??
According to the description of the enumeration district in both years, it was on the east side of Lower North Street.

In 1871 Thomas's son Edward is still there - it's called Gullack's Ope in 1871.

From google -
Plymouth has a lot of "Ope"s, presumably short for "opening".

These are ginnels or single track roads between 2 buildings and usually share the same name as the minor road running behind the properties. Princess St Ope, Basket Ope, etc.

Try googling St annes brewery history -

No. 16 on the list has 1&2 Gullick's Ope, Exeter - plus others

Very detailed history of Lower North Street / Northernhay Street/ Paul Street and area - but unfortunately no mention of Gullick or similar:

Also give up "Hope" - so to speak.
