Thanks again for info, more digging required I think. Many of my Wilson forebears were marine engineers or connected to that field.
Thanks again.

Just in case -
Of all the William Wilsons born c1831 in Newcastle, showing in the 1851 census, this is the only one not in a manual trade.
Not that that really means he's any more likely than any other to have become a policeman by 1861!

Thank you to all who replied!
No, I do not have a marriage cert for William, or conformation of his birth date, I had been relying on what had been on census returns. If I could find some siblings it would be so much easier!

Hope someone can help me out with this one. I have been going around in circles for some time looking for William Wilson born circa 1831 Newcastle Upon Tyne.
He was married to Alison Wilson nee Logan born 1833 in Dunse, Berwickshire. William is recorded on the 1861 Census as a 'Police Constable' and again on the 1881 census as an 'Inspector of Police'. After this he seems to disappear. I have been unable to trace his parents, birth or death. On the 1891 census his wife Alison is recorded living with her married daughter Eliza Dutcheon nee Wilson at Appleby Street, Tynemouth.
William and Alison are my 2 x gr grandparents and I would appreciate any help in finding what happened to William or his parents etc.
